What kind of heat sink must that thing have? Battery life?

Personally, I think the Pentiums with 64-bit extensions are the best thing
around right now for those yearning toward 64-bits. But for laptops I don't
know. I switched back to a tower once I no longer had a daily train ride.

What can I do with my PIV with 64-bit extensions anyway? Can I install and
run Win64? I'm genuinely curious.

Pentiums with 64-bit extensions (EMT64) are the same as (in 64 bit mode) as
AMD64 (in 64 bit mode),
except for two things:
- They consume more watts per performance.
- They have an extra instruction (just for make things incompatibles again
Smile )

Yes WinXP 64 for AMD64 and Intel EMT64 is shipping right now. XP users can

get a free upgrade for XP64.
But probably you will have to wait until third party hardware vendors have
the drivers updated (except in the case
that you have an NVidia card in a NForce-chipset motherboard wich already
have 64 bits drivers!!).

Where can I get a free upgrade? Can I continue to use XP32 until I install
XP64?

Google this ng for the details its been announced more than once here. MS
has announced that they will upgrade XP32 licenses to XP64 free of charge.

Definitely will have to look into that. I'm hoping to build a 64-bit X2
system soon and I'd like to at least give Win64 a chance. Test it out,
see if I can find drivers for all my hardware, and make sure World of
Warcraft runs. You know, the important stuff. :)

I'm in the Microsoft Partner program, which gets me a huge pile of
software (XP, Servers 2003, SQL, pretty much everything associated with
Office) with multiple licenses for most of it, but oddly enough it
doesn't include the 64-bit WinXP.

I think it will be soon. :)

I have a Sager notebook with AMD 64 3700MHz and doesn't get too hot and
the batery runs out after about one hour (17" screen).

Anybody play with a Voodoo laptop? They look serious.

I recently bought an AMD Turion based laptop and I'm pretty happy with
it. The only area where it is a bit sluggish is on the video side- it
only has the ATI 200M graphics integrated chipset. And even then, it
isn't that bad on video related tasks. It's a good laptop for Delphi
2005 development. These CPUs seem like the next generation of AMD's
64-bit mobile CPUs- a bit more powerful than the Turions but they
obviously generate more heat as a result. The reason I went with the
Turion is because it is quite a bit more efficient than the mobile
Athlons and they're still 64-bit.

Cheers,
Kevin.

It never was "free". If you went for their first offer you had to stop
using the 32-bit version that you'd bought altogether. I'd hardly call
that free. ;-)

I considered going for their "free" offer but decided this was just a
little bit too much of a requirement. I'd like to use both 32-bit and
64-bit in parallel until all my apps are available for the x64 platform.

Cheers,
Kevin.

YOUR 32-BIT APPS WILL RUN ON WIN64!!!!

How can you not realize that at this juncture? What rock have you been
hiding under?

It looks like you've cleverly evaded a free upgrade. Well done.
