Interesting. The point of being in business is to make money, not to provide
something which appears to be useful (that's just a means). While we've been
arguing over the pros and cons of .net, trying to interpret Borland's next
move, what direction Microsoft expects us to follow, blah blah blah, it may
end up being the case that Microsoft finds their old monopoly played out,
and that being the biggest media provider (over Google) can make Bill and
Steve a lot more money.

I thought so too; but I would like to know what Ballmer actually said. I
even listened to most of his keynote at TechEd 2005, available here:

but can't find any hint of this.
I'm mistrustful of short out-of-context quotes.

It was a talk in Australia in the last couple of days.
Todays Financial Review (in Australia) had some coverage of it. I didn't
read it closely (I was looking through it in the supermarket checkout aisle)
but the gist of it was that MS growth was down. Balmer was "bullish" about
future prospects, and said that MS was growing strongly, but investors
expecting growth levels of 20% were simply unrealistic. He addressed China,
and said that while there was a big demand for hardware in China, there was
little demand there for software, due presumably to China's endorsement of
open source and IP protection issues in China.
I think Balmer's comments were more to the effect that growth was slowing
generally in the industry amd MS's growth with it, rather than a comment
specifically on the viability or uptake of.net, although he may of course
have said something to that effect in his talk.
There's probably a link to a talk transcript around somewhere.

That was probably related to revenues.

Also interesting (following a link from the article) is
<<
Microsoft is facing increasing pressure from alternative products as state
and federal governments move to level the playing field between proprietary
and open-source software.
Canberra recently released a guide to agencies' procurement of open source,
while the New South Wales government is next month expected to formally
constitute a panel of suppliers of Linux and open-source software solutions
for its agencies.
http://zdnet.com.au/news/business/0,39023166,39199259,00.htm
At the governmental level, there seems to be a continuing big push towards
open source.

Or to the little girl in our street with big scars in her face. Completely
off-topic, but I am sure that at least 90% of all dogs are a surrogate for a
child, and their owners are totally incapable to educate their dog. Strange
job description for a predator.

The headline doesn't match the quote:
"Asked about the future of its .NET strategy, Ballmer admitted the platform
"had stalled in the last 12 months". But there would be a renewed .NET push,
he said, and this was "an assigned priority" for the government sector."
Instead of "is at a standstill," it would have been more accurate to say,
"had stalled in the past 12 months." But I suppose less people would read
on. More at 11.

Isn't this confusing a statement of 'where the market is at' with a
statement of 'where Balmer wants the market to go'?
A statement that the .net market is currently stalling is not inconsistent
with a statement that MS wants to reinvigorate that market and give it a
push . . .
