|
|
Greetings:
I have an application using tidhttp to fetch files via a cgi. A
customer, after installing comcast cable, experiences winsock error
10061 now. I know the general meaning of the error but in this case
the domain name is hard coded and the same app is working for everyone
else with no problems. Questions:
I've found (via google) that comcast is known to screw things up, like
ssl email retrieval with Eudora. Does anyone have any experience with
comcast messing up tidhttp and what is the solution?
My research is pointing to dns failure. Is there any way to test this
short of sending a patched program with the IP address in it to the
problem customer?
More and more people are using firewalls and there are a lot of
options here. Windows, routers, zonealarm, etc, etc. How have you
guys handled this? What's a good strategy for detecting, and
potentially getting around these devices? I've recently changed the
software to use http rather than ftp and this has helped but not
eliminated the problem.
Thanks!

Have you tried using the actual IP address instead of a domain name?

No, and I'd like to avoid doing this.

Such options have nothing to do with the client applications themselves,
everything is just a matter of configuring the firewalls/routers themselves
to allow traffic correctly.

They have a lot to do with *supporting* client applications, though.
I suspect my customers are typical in that they really have no clue
how their firewalls are set up, or even what a firewall is. Most
didn't know what ftp was. A good number don't believe my client is
even using the internet because it doesn't use their browser - I'm not
kidding.
I'm not one to ridicule these people - they're not experts and just
expect things to work. I can't really research every firewall product
and broadband 'connectivity software' to provide instructions or
workarounds.
This is beginning to cause me a lot of grief and the gist of my
general question was how are you guys supporting 'net enabled client
apps when low-tech end users are using firewalls?

If Internet Explorer can run on the computer, then it must know where to
look for a decent DNS server. Can you read this value from IE?
