I read some threads joking that Dexter is Update 4. This isn't a joke
and is not acceptable. I just went thru the entire process to prove
that staying with Borland Delphi is a sound business plan. This plan
included using Delphi 2005 which we are now NOT using. We have moved
back to Delphi 7 because of all the broken technology we use in our
project. I can almost guarantee that Borland will not make it to the
next version of the product if we tell them we need D2006 even though we
didn't use D2005.

Update 4, for us, needs to have these fixes:
1. Sockets (TSocketConnection) fix (show stopper)

Some might say I can just fix the units that are broke. Nope. The two
units that seem to be the cause are SConnect.pas & ScktComp.pas.
ScktComp.pas is in the RTL90.bpl package which, if you turn on packages,
is one that is always required. We NEED packages turned on because we
have a plugin architecture which requires TApplication to be shared
between the host and all packages.

2. COM+ Transactional Wizards (secret key in Dexter not acceptable)

3. Startup D2005, then open project, wait 30 seconds to 1 minute before
project opens

4. Borland Socket Server fix.(although I can recompile it with the fix
quite easily). The cause is the new TCustomForm property "PopupMode"
introduced in D8.
See http://blogs.borland.com/abauer/archive/2004/02/10/295.aspx

5. Many IDE crashes which I can not explain. Read these groups to get
details.

What do other people think is needed in Update 4? ( Well, there should
be one!)

last ditch attempt,

I think it is, but they will probably make us upgrade to the new version

to have all the fixes.. if they do do that, I am expecting a better
price than the upgrade route, but I see the D8 never got that
wait and see

Yeah. I'm still waiting for Borland to come up with an acceptable
compensation for everybody who made the mistake of buying Delphi 8. I
lost a hell of a lot of credit because I was pushing for our company to
get it and it turned out to be a big pile of ...

Anyways.. my 2c.

In my opinion D8 was far worse than D2005, which I personally find to be a
very good product.

Anyway, my point is, if people who bought D8 didn't get anything then I
doubt people who bought D2005 will get anything either.

Sad it is, I mean we have a policy here at work, If a product we sell
is not 100% , we swop it or fix it, not make them buy the next version

Are there QC reports for all of those? But, well, my personal guess
is that you are out of luck on 2005. There are many who agree with
you that an update 4 is needed, but I personally doubt we will se it.

I have testing with VS2005 (in beta) and it is more stable than D2005 after
2 service packs!
now thats just sad!!

Incidentally, my experience with VS .NET 2003 is that the form
inheritance is all cocked up. I now have to use C#Builder (2005) to
edit inherited forms because VS .NET 2003 can't cut it (it moves form
elements all over the place and loses properties). So it isn't all
roses in the VS camp. I guess it all depends what you're doing with
VS.NET. Or perhaps VS.NET 2005 Beta is more stable and bug-free than
VS.NET 2003 release version? ;-)

Cheers,
Kevin.

You must have unlimited resources then. Or perhaps you are sitting on
top of a gold mine. Well, you see it is not the case for Borland. They
are very short of money and other resources and must care then not
about us the customers but rather about their shareholders.

What we got is experience, and a push to look elsewhere. While the majority
waiting for Delphi 2005 was still in the dark, those of us who jumped on
the Delphi 8 bandwagon quickly realized what was coming.

Delphi 8 was a great learning tool.

Well, at least DeXter is going to be solid product.
(Because it simply *has* to be).

That's odd, because that happens to me in D2005 with C# inherited forms.

What a level of understanding. You would make splendid
salesman telling this point of view to your customers.
Tell them that they are only exist to feed shareholders.

That's why I am not in the sales business. I would hate to lie for
living.
