Hi;
Hope this is the appropriate group for this set of queries.
We have been pokey at following recent Delphi versions, and are working with
D5 on a huge enterprise scale application. As Delphi 2005 is about to (has
been?) released, we figure to jump there.
This raises numerous questions about 3rd party VCL control compatibility.
What version of Delphi, if any, will 2005 be analogous to? i.e. V9? I'm not
in the loop, but it appears that 8 is really 7 in another set of robes?
In short, does 2005 use previous version VCL controls? I am not seeing any
reference on developer sites to pending VCL control versions that address
Delphi versions higher than 7.
Look forward to seeing the trial of the new IDE.
Thanks,
Steve Lovejoy

No, 8 was a whole new version for writing .NET application.

Delphi 2005 is really the equivalent of Delphi 9 but includes support for
Win32 applications like Delphi 2 through 7, Delphi for .NET applications
like Delphi 8, as well as C# .NET applications like C#Builder. There
will also be many IDE and productivity improvements. Delphi 2005 has not
been released yet.

Hi Mike;
Thank you for your response. My initial understanding was that D2005 was
pending, then I saw several roll out gatherings on a schedule somewhere that
are stale dated (in the teens of October). Hence my misunderstanding. I have
noted that the "buy" buttons still say "pre-order" (or words to that
effect).
Making the new version compatible with previous VCLs is a beautiful thing.
Thanks guys! There are several older VCLs that I love, which are no longer
made/maintained.
What are we seeing as a release date at this juncture? Is there an advantage
to pre-ordering (i.e. beta testing, RC shipped then patched by download
etc.)?
Thanks,
Steve Lovejoy

I don't believe any dates have been announced. Pre-ordering simply means
ordering now and receiving the product when it ships.

To be perfectly clear, if all you have for your third party components
are DCU's then those components will _only_ be compatible with your
existing Delphi version. However, if you have the actual source code
for all of your components then it's likely you could fairly quickly get
(at least) the runtime portion of the controls working with D2005. If
the components include Open Tools API designer support for things like
property editors etc. then you may have massage the code to work with
the new Tools API.
With each release of the Win32 compiler in order for us to make
interface changes (among other things) the DCU file format has to change
making it incompatible with previous releases.
