Where can I find out what will be in the next version of Delphi? I've been
writing DotNet applications in Dephi 2005 and find it excellent (it looks
like many people in this forum would disagree). In particular, will Delphi
2006 support DotNet 2.0, and will it have a DotNet media player?

Not a whole lot of the next release have been made public, but one thing we do
know is .NET 2.0 will be supported in the release after DeXter. Which sort of
makes sense as .NET 2.0 isn't out yet and it looks Like DeXter will be out
around Q4 so they will probably be released around the same time. Borland can't
chase the beta .NET 2.0 (which is still changing).

Well they could, but chasing a moving target can be a lot more work. <g>

ISTR hearing somewhere that no-one is allowed to redistribute the .NET
2.0 beta, and Borland has always (if you can count two versions as
"always") shipped the appropriate .NET redist with Delphi, so that
practice pretty much discounts any support of .NET 2.0 in a shipping
product until after .NET 2.0 has been released.

So for .NET development, future win64 development it doesnt pay to buy
the next version of Delphi, because its only ver 1.1 and win32, third
attempt at .NET, and most clients that follow the MS bus like to have
the latest and greatest hyped products and technologies, so maybe
waiting for the release after next is more viable. Dont get me wrong
for Win32 Development Delphi is still tops.

Also I dont see why It cant be a SP, addin or plugin for Dexter.

Wouldn't it be possible to begin development in 1.1 and move to 2.0 when
Dexter is released?

Apparently Dexter wont support .NET 2.0, you gotta buy the next version
after it

I've added two pages to the Delphi Wiki Cities site for the future
Delphi releases. I would encourage people to use this as a reference
and to update any information here:

So go ahead and begin 1.1 development in D2005 and DeXter and move it to
2.0 when Highlander is released.

You could always purchase D2005 (or DeXter) and Software Assurance.
That way, provided Highlander is delivered within a year of purchase,
you'll get it anyway. And future upgrades (provided they're delivered
at least yearly) will be cheaper too, should you decide to renew your
SA contract.

Sounds like you could benefit from software assurance. One year of SA
costs a lot less than a Delphi upgrade.

The Delphi Small Team Pack plus SA is a pretty good deal. $3,660.00 is
the Architect upgrade price for two licenses, 20% off. Two SA contracts
are $1,677, which guarantee DeXter for free. (Maybe Highlander too.
Can't guarantee that.) Basically, $838 for an Architect upgrade. Grr, I
paid just over a $1,000 for my Architect SA. Curse these sales! ;-)

Since VS 2005.NET (to be released in November, or so I've read) needs
..NET 2.0 too, I Assume that .NET 2.0 will go live in November or earlier.
Is Borland so anxious to have Delphi 2006 out before November?

(In order to reply per e-mail, please just remove the ".net"
from my e-mail address. Leave the rest of the address intact
including the "antispam" part. I had to take this measure to
counteract unsollicited mail.)

Thanks.

I don't think anyone has said they are, however I expect it would make
little difference: .NET 2.0 support would probably need to be finalised
well before release.

I've always wondered if there is a marketing advantage to releasing a
company's product just before or just after the competition releases
their product. My guess Borland would want to ride the "new IDE" wake
created by a Microsoft release. In other words, soon after a VS2005 release.
