For a while I've been telling my managers I need to upgrade my D3
applications because D3 is no longer supported. This may be a lie, but it's
the impression I got at BorCon2002.
I've worked on applications in D1-7 and managed to keep most of them
upgraded during other program enhancements. I still have 2 applications in
D3 that have a few third party components and are big enough that I can't
upgrade them 'in my spare time'. Am I correct in thinking an upgrade is a
good idea if we plan to use the applications for a few more years?
Can you tell me the real status of D3 support?
If I push for D7 instead of a completely different tool, is D7 likely to be
supported long enough for the manager pushing for the other tool to move on?
Are there any advantages/disadvantages I should bring to my manager's
attention?
I think all the users have Window 2000. Both apps use BDE connections to an
Oracle database. One uses QuickReport and one uses the TCRPE version 8.3
component to Crystal Reports.
Thanks.

Delphi 3.01, the service pack on a CD, seems to be generally
unavailable. I don't know if you can call and pay for support on
Delphi 3, you might possibly get a custom code fix, but it won't be
released in any other service packs. The BDE SQL Links are
unsupported, so BDE->Oracle is a bad idea.
If you purchase D7 (quick) and get Software Assurance, you'll get
two or three free support incidents (assuming you care about such a
thing). You'll also get ADO, which makes a handy drop-in
replacement for the BDE.
I'd stick with Crystal 8 or 8.5 for VCL-based Crystal Reports
development. Quick Reports is not installed by default in D7, but
it's available on the disk somewhere, I think.
If you don't have to do maintenance on the D3 apps, then don't
worry about it, they'll probably work on every Windows from here to
2050. But if you have to do maintenance, or actually add new
features, it would probably be beneficial to move them along to
whatever the current Win32 IDE is.
Finally, I don't think Borland officially monitors this group - for
an official "support" answer you'll probably have to call Scotts
Valley.

Thanks. I currently have all the software so purchasing is not an issue,
except for the 3rd-party components. I'll see what they have in mind for
enhancements and go from there.

I wondered about that - how can you stand remembering the different
IDE's? It's hard enough for me to go back and forth between 5, 6,
and 7 that I finally just moved everything to 7.

Yep, that's correct. The newsgroups are supposed to be a user / peer
supported area. Any posts from Borland people here are usually done when we
have some free moments. We do our best to monitor newsgroups to provide
support on issues, and to get feedback from our end users, but if you want
official support then you will need to get a hold of our Tech Support people
directly. You can get more info at the Borland Tech Support website at
