|

We are doing large project (transition from Windows to Linux) but some windows boxes will be reused. Delphi and Kylix seems to be an ideal cross-platform solution for us and a way of accomplishing interoperability with legacy Window.
I come across this image "RDesktop to a windows XP machine, and in the background is Delphi 7 running under Wine"
http://images.mandrakesoft.com/img/screenshots/mdk100-scr4.jpg
http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/fscreenshots.php3
I have three questions:
1.What are the steps to install and run Delphi 7 on Linux under Wine?
2.Where I can purchase Delphi 7?
3.Is it posible to run Delphi 5 on Linux under Wine?
TIA Jiter

1. Don't have the specifics for Delphi, but once I tried Wine in Linux (por
a compiled app not Delphi itself) and what I would do in your case would be
to run the wine executable passing as parameter the Delphi setup.exe
program. Nothing else should be required in general. winehq.com have all the
necessary steps in any case. I think wine comes preinstalled in all the
complete installations like Mandrake else you can download from wine web
site.
2. At the moment, I guess that Ebay (be careful), some Borland
representative around the world who are giving copies at lower costs (see
other thread about this) or bundled with Delphi 2005 (be careful again, I
think most SKUs don't bring it, not sure about this though)
3. See http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=42&versionId=2325

http://www.transgaming.com/latest_news.php may also be of interest, my
own experience of wine was not as good as I had hoped, even simple apps
often failed. Whereas cedega seems to run even the more intensive of
games.
Id try running it for you but my linux box is text only.. its a server
I didnt bother with x.. I dont even think its graphics card is much
capable of anything other than text .. :)

Be aware that people cannot sell their license of D7 if they have registered
it.

Pavel, the guy who now manages the DirectSound project "BASS" once showed me
screenshots of Delphi 5 running on Linux. I wasn't really interested
because I couldn't care less about Linux, but now look, I have found a use
for that seemingly useless information after all :-)

I knew that if you upgraded your copy of D7, that you couldn't sell it, but |
merely registering it prevents selling the license? are you sure?

I had D6 running under wine about a year ago, and it worked pretty good
as long as you didn't use the debugger, it would totally puke if you
tried to put a break point in.
But that was awhile ago, so it may work much better now.

Absolutely 100%. It says so in the license agreement "non transferrable".
I phoned Borland UK and they confirmed it.

this "non transferrable" is not legal in large parts of the world.

In the USA license for D7, it says
"13.5 Assignment. You may not transfer the Software
media, assign this License or assign any of your
rights or delegate any of your obligations under
this License, by operation of law or otherwise
(including by merger, sale of assets or
consolidation), without Borland's prior written
consent. Any attempted assignment in violation of
this Section 13.5 will be void."

A year ago I tried to get D5 to run under Wine and it kind of worked. |
However, there was a major problem in that the focused window did not go
to the top of the screen. For example, switching between the form and
source code did not bring the focused window to the front.
We've been more successful getting Delphi apps to run under Wine.
