First things first. I'm looking for encouragement with a healthy dose of
facts. Admittedly, there's doesn't seem to be much programming period in
this area, but it still would be nice to know of any other Delphi shops. My
big hope is that I can focus my job search amongst the Delphi faithful
rather than blindly posting my resume on pages like Monster & Dice (which
I've already done). It seems that all of the Delphi jobs are in LA or
Irvine. But the commute is awful. Telecommuting (at least part time) could
ease that burden, but so far I've had no luck finding an employer willing to
try this. The salaries that I've been asked to consider don't even come
close to allowing me to move there. It SEEMS like the only option left is
to accept a job out of state (you know somewhere where the cost of living
isn't completely outrageous). I'm not entirely opposed to moving out of
state, but I've never lived outside of California before(please don't hold
that against me). So I want to make sure that I've at least exhausted every
option which includes coming to you, the Delphi faithful, seeking advice.
(BTW, if you've read this far, thank you very much! Please come say hi to
me at the Borland Conference this November. I am scheduled to speak twice!)
All that being said, it does seem as though there is plenty of work in
Delphi, which is encouraging.
Thanks so much for your time,
Christian Wilkerson

Hi Chris,
You didn't mention looking in borland.public.delphi.jobs. It's worth
a shot anyway.
Good luck with your job search.

Have you tried going through the SoCal or Orange County DUG? Seems to me
there was a big, active group down there, even putting on mini-BorCon
events.

Thank you. I believe I will do that. I think I will do it to see if there
is anything reasonably close by. If that fails, after a month or two I will
post it again with a big "WILLING TO RELOCATE" tag.
Thanks again,

You know, I used to belong to OCDUG a few years back. I stopped going when
I moved away from that area. I seem to remember that there were a few
developers that traveled to their Irvine meetings all the way from
Riverside. I will definitely check that out. Thanks for the advice.

It was always just a wee bit to far to drive down from Fresno for the
evening, for me. Haven't heard from them in a while. Good luck!

Well, if you're looking to add a developer, I'd love to send you my resume.
In brief, I've been professionally working with Delphi since 1996. Mostly
database applications. Primarily using MSSQL on the backend. The last few
years I have been heavily involved with writing and maintaining a server
application for my company. It's multi-threaded and uses Indy components.
In fact, multi-threaded database applications, and using Indy components is
what I'm going to be speaking on at Borcon in November. As far as VS, back
in the 90's I did write alot in VB, but these days I mostly use VC(6 &
2003.net).
It doesn't look like the email address you have displayed will work.
But if you'd like to get in touch, give a me call 909-463-1934. Mine is
somewhat obfuscated as well. Spam sucks.
Talk to you later,

Hadn't really considered the SF Bay Area. Correct me if I'm wrong, but
isn't it really expensive to live there(i.e. cost of homes)?

A local boy! I actually spent most of my time growing up in Whittier and La
Habra. Graduated La Habra High in 90. My wife and I moved to Cucamonga in
98 because we could afford a house here. But the way the housing market has
gotten so crazy in SoCal, I couldn't afford to buy my own house.
As far as Delphi work is concerned, it's becoming increasingly difficult to
find the kind of salaries that allow us to afford to stay here and enjoy the
traffic and smog. ;-)
Speaking of SF, are you going to be at the conference?

There is Delphi in the Bay Area, although my business is starting to
serve clients accross the country. It's not uncommon for me to be on a
project for a client and to have several consultants based around the
country having to coordinate.

Whittier used to have a great cruise night in the 70's. Way before
your time I assume. ;-)

Same here, just no smog. <g>
I think most areas in California require two incomes to buy a home.
Unless you're in east San Diego County or something like that. ;-)

No, I stopped going to those things years ago. Too much hype and
vaporware for me.
I seem to recall there are some software companies in West LA, but
that's even worse than driving to Irvine.
Are there no companies off the San Bernardino Freeway between Pomona
and Ontario looking for programmers? I seem to recall there were quite
a few medium sized companies all along the freeway.

Just to be clear, you're talking about Borland conferences, not other
conferences here? If so, you must not go to ANY conferences at all,
since Borland covers more "immediate use" topics than just about any
other vendor.
