Hey Borlanders!
An image just leaped from the fevered brain of mine, of
the long ago, abandoned Delphi/Java byte code compiler
you guys started.
Any chances of releasing it open source?
Mike

Convince me that doing this will make Borland at least 5x the money it
will cost to do this, and I'll be happy to champion it internally.

Everyone who buys it would probably have to buy JBuilder?

I think releasing a Delphi java bytecode compiler as open source would
generate a lot of buzz in the industry.
Here's a business case:
Because it becomes a "run everywhere" language, more people will volunteer
to expose themselves to the Delphi language and inevitably realize how
awesome it is => Open source add-ins to the Delphi IDE to integrate the java
bytecode compiler will follow (like the dotnet preview one in D7) => More
people will become familiar with Delphi IDE (especially if a free version -
Personal Edition? - is available), and will want to use Delphi for
professional projects too => Borland sells more copies of Delphi Pro and
Enterprise.
Did I miss something? :)

Sounds great! Now, tell me how that buzz = more $ for Borland.

I don't recall an open source add-in for the preview compiler.

yes. The part where sales of more copies of Delphi Pro and Enterprise
are a foregone conclusion.

It isn't. It just generates awareness at no extra cost to Borland, so that
you won't have to spend money on it.

I don't recall an open source add-in for the preview compiler.

Neither do I, John. Did I really claim that it was open source, technically
speaking? I thought that statement was open to some degree of
interpretation, and that you would have noticed that and interpreted it in
favor of the facts.
The point I was trying to get across was this: The Delphi 7 add-in for the
preview compiler demonstrates that it is possible for third parties to
integrate an external compiler into the IDE.

yes. The part where sales of more copies of Delphi Pro and Enterprise

It isn't. It's a scenario that, from my limited perspective, seems
plausible. No guarantees. You can invest a few dollars in a risky idea that
you think just might work and see what happens, or you can put your bytecode
compiler under the pillow and see how much money that'll make you.

It is too tenuous. It will never get approval for "seems plausible."

We've got MANY more obvious ideas that are FAR more likely to earn
Borland money than the high opportunity cost of open sourcing something
that contains IP on the promise of "maybe."

Nothing is that simplistic, particularly when IP is involved.

Correct me if I misunderstood the original suggestion: Borland would have
to do nothing but donate source code of that dead project. You've nothing
to lose.

Pretty much the same way everyone uses MS products ... Because
MS made it.
Buzz = always more $$ in the long run.

Take a walk down the corridor to the marketing department, John. Ask
them to show you how *each* ad they have run has generated revenue for
Borland.
Hint: They won't be able to. As the old saw goes "50% of advertising
revenue is wasted. Now, if we knew WHICH 50% ...."
The thing is that even without that information - you keep advertising.
Why?

<SARCASM>
But you forget that this is the same Borland that didn't have enough
resources to have someone keep the Delphi Direct feed up to date. They
*certainly* won't have resources available to manage the open sourcing
of a dead product.

Great idea!
Where is the path to sourceforge?
One big advantage is that I as a delphi developer - could get in touch
with java in smooth way
Really cool.
John, shell I perhaps talk Dale?
thanks

It is passing strange that a company that is software lifecycle impaired is
selling software lifecycle tools.
What next ?
MS selling Linux security tools ?
