Suggestion for a new pulse on BDN:

How would you rate the current release of Delphi?

[ ] Totally satisfied
[ ] I miss some features
[ ] I hit some bugs
[ ] Too many bugs - service needed.

<g> I doubt they'll do that one. FWIW we could just do it right here.
Are those radiobuttons or checkboxes there?
My choice would be the combination of options 2 and 3.

Pulses had been radiobuttons so far. But if we stay here in the newsgroup we could use checkboxes as well.

Would that be 0- or 1-based ?

D7 is very different from D5, I'm afraid this pulse will tell you D7
customer satisfaction is down w.r.t. D5.
Regardless of whether it "outsold" all its predecessors.
In fact, D5 was everything that D7 isn't, IMO: Innovating, exciting,
stable, *well-supported* (there were core update packs)...

..and you know this, how? Or are you just speculating again?

He said "I'm afraid", may be interpreted differently by different
people, to me it means the he has no facts at the moment to slam on to
the table, it is just assumptions he makes, which of course still may be
interesting and still may be worth talking about, not the least to get
them confirmed or weakened.

I would speculate that Kris has made a sound judgement.

"[X] I miss a good argument to have my D5 apps ported"

Seriously, we have copies of D7 here, one is installed, we made a few test
runs, bumped on a few issues (on multithreading, DFMs no longer backward-
compatible being the top ones) but haven't made the jump yet: not enough
significant leaps from D5 beside cosmetic aspects to take the time (and the
risk) to switch the whole codebase from D5 to D7... so we're waiting for
the 1st service pack -_-

"[X] I'm too scared of the new inline help"

Having all that C++ specific junk in the Delphi help brings more confusion
than anything else, and played no minor role here in holding the D7 switch back.
A purified help would be a good thing for the D7 SP1. :)

Last should be rephrased

KS> [ ] Too many bugs - service needed.

[ ] I hit by serious bugs that making nearly impossible what i want to
do only with Delphi. Bugfix or 3-rd party replacement needed.

Had the same problem answered here for me yesterday. Help -> Customise,
remove all CLX-specific help components. While you're at it you can remove
any other stuff you don't intend to use. It only takes a minute or so.

That only works because the CLX help is in a separate file. The C++ stuff is
actually in the same file, so OpenHelp can't help you there.

[v] More than totally satisfied. Nothing else, not even JBuilder could match
the quality of Delphi 7. The bugs are minor and work-around are no-brainers
for those who are not lazy and using their imaginations. It is the best
Delphi yet. I can live without service packs although I would welcome it for
the other folks around here to make them happy.
