Hi Guys,
Thanks a lot. I was very surprised when I found out... I had no idea that I
was even being considered. I hope it is actually the truth and not some kind
of cruel joke by Marco .
Regards,
Pierre

Indeed. This is one well deserved award if there ever was one.
Although the chances are pretty slim, I hope Borland pays you 10% of
what Danny Thorpe thinks FastMM4 is worth, which would make you an
instant millionaire as FastMM4, besides providing huge performance
improvements in threaded environments, brings to light in the Delphi
IDE, and any application build with Delphi, those impossible hard to
find bugs which make or brake a product's robustness reputation.
FastMM4 is a typical improvement to Delphi that no one in the old
Borland management team would understand, but which we the developers
and our customers dearly appreciate. It is quite promising to see that
the current Delphi development team (which I understood chooses the
winner) have selected Pierre as a winner.
I find it a bit disappointing though that Eric Grange wasn't a
co-winner. At least some of the award's honours (and of those 10%)
should go his way. After all it was he who created RecyclerMM, the
basis on top of which FastMM was build. As an old and long dead
physicist, a certain Sir Isaac Newton, once wrote: "If I have been able
to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of
giants.".
Plus, Eric has given us the SamplingProfiler. Another of these great
gems of which I totally utterly cannot understand why Borland lets it
wither in the basm newsgroup, instead of picking it up and slamming it
in the Delphi IDE as soon as it saw the light of the day.
Anyone at Borland (management that is, as anyone on the Delphi
development team will understand the following), if you are reading
this: Forget about throwing hundreds of millions at companies who are
mainly busy with filling their webpages with bla-di-bla-di-bla for PHBs
trying to get bought. Spend 1% of that amount on the Pierre's, Eric's,
Jordan Russel's, Tim Young's, Alex Denisov's and Mike Lischke's of this
world whose webpages are generally plain ugly, but who are the
superstar developers of this age creating the stuff that we, who buy
Delphi, really want. Your reward will be returns on investment that are
orders of magnitudes higher. Before you dispose of this idea, 'cause
combining commercial business with open source developers is not
standard business practise or something you learn in the Harvard MBA
program, think of Kahn and Hejlsberg who didn't found Borland on
standard development and marketing practices either.
