I am new to Delphi and am evaluating to what degree it is suitable to building mass-market cmmercil Windows apps, vs. it's suitability to internal, data-driven IT projects.
What are the "best" or most "famous" windows commercail /shareware apps that you know of, whcih are done with Delphi?

There's a decent list here:
http://www.balticsolutions.com/bwd/
Delphi is a general purpose programming language with powerful database
capabilities. As such, it's as good a language for writing commercial
applications as any other general purpose language. Possibly better, if
you take into consideration ease-of-use.

Delphi itself is probably the most well know Delphi application.
FeedDemon is a great commercial program built with Delphi.

Whenever asked about Delphi by people who come from a traditionally MS
development tools environment, I tend to tell them that Delphi combines
the ease of use of VB with the power of C++. This is a somewhat
simplified description of the situation, but I find it's a ballpark
statement that begins to explain why us Delphi types love it so much.

Hi,
The following are a couple of large scale, enterprise level applications which are being sold commercially and are built
using Delphi (and kbmMW ofcourse )
www.cx2000.com - for a large scale application running in your US courtrooms today
www.tripoint.co.uk - for a large scale car rental application running all over the UK
In addition look for
http://www.stoneware.dk/english/default.htm - which contains a rather famous web site editor and lots of other apps all
written in Delphi.
There are _many_ other very serious applications built with Delphi, both inside and outside internal IT departments.

There is not really a 'vs.' in it, as it is suitable for all you
mention, from small scale freeware apps to large scale vertical market
enterprise systems, and everything in between.

The single biggest selling point, for me, WRT to deployment, is
Delphi allows you to create single-exe applications. You can avoid
any ActiveX registration, you can even get away without a
setup/installer package, in many cases. You can use ActiveX if you
wish, but you don't *have* to.
