I was unable to install Delphi 8. I have tried two machines so far (both
running Windows XP SP1a) and in both instances, ended up with the same
result:
- upon loading:
"Translator load failed: R:DelphiBindfm71.bpl"
- followed by an exception:
"Can't load package r:delphiBinvcldotnetdesignide71.bpl
Exception EAccessViolation in module rtl71.bpl at 09AF1078
Access violation at address 09AF2078. Read of address 00000000."
- then the Delphi 8 splashscreen, ending with an error message:
"Interface not supported."
Anybody some pointers?

Hard to imagine it's a legal copy. Or even the shipping version.
If it's a legitimate beta copy, contact beta support. If it's not,
throw it away and wait for the legal shipping version.
Finally, I'd guess that it would have to be installed onto a local
disk, for the .NET security model stuff. If R: is your CD drive,
I'd guess someone burned you a bad copy of an illegal beta product.

It's not a beta and it is not illegal either. It came by mail today, in a
box whose cover said "Borland Delphi 8 for the Microsoft .NET Framework."
Much to my surprise, there is almost no printed documentation included (save
for a tiny booklet).

You "advice" is not helpful at all. What makes you think I am running an
illegal copy?

Wilbert:
I guessed most people think they will not receive D8 until after
Christmas/New Year. BTW, which part of the country are you in? East coast?

Thanks. You must be very lucky. I live 20 miles from Borland and have not
gotten my architect version yet.
Did you standard/enterprise/architect? Maybe the different sku's are shipped
different dates?

It's marked "Professional" and the files on the discs have a December 17
timestamp; so yeah, must be brand new. Now if I only can get it installed.
Three attempts in the meantime, no avail. Last attempt was via Remote
Desktop on a Windows 2003 Server and it bombed again with the same message.
The reason why I got it before everybody else must have something to do with
me being a BorCon 2003 attendee, I think. At least, that word could be
found on the mailing label of the enclosing package.

Thanks Wilbert.
I think John Kaster replied in a Delphi non Tech thread that the CD's were
duplicated in the U.K and that would explain why the Europeans got their
CD's first.
When I get my Architect copy (ordered at Borcon wth 50% discount), I will
try to install on my XP laptop and if I can get it installed I will let you
know. I supposed you did install the NET framework?

Did all that (the installer will not continue unless you do so) and trying
again now, testing the hypothesis that it is the Integrated Translation
Environment package.
** chugga chugga grind grind **
But alas. Still got that access violation, followed by the "Interface not
supported"-message.
"So do I feel lucky? Does this make my day?"

Sorry to hear about that ...it's too bad most people, including Team B
members are out for the holidays. Try posting in non Tech. I believe at
least one other guy in the U.K has received his D8.

Wilbert:
In non Tech, under Borland Layoffs thread on Dec 24, Alisdair M reported he
has installed and is quite happy!
Maybe if yiu emailed him, you'll get an answer?

I'm sorry - I realized later I was pretty harsh, and legal copies
would be out soon.
Is the R: drive the optical drive, or is it the installation target?

Update: I got it to work on the fifth attempt.
In a virgin Windows 2000 Professional-window, under the watchful eye of
VMWare. So it works, sorta, kinda. At least I know now that I don't have to
return the discs and start wondering what the roadblock is, on the four
other machines I tried.
Hey, on balance: there is really no rush here. Dot Net won't be entering
the mainstream for another couple of years.

Great! I also found out that my copy is currently on a Fed X truck somewhere
in Santac Clara (from a tracking number in the invoice received this
morning), Looks like D8 will be here for Christmas after all. Ho Ho Ho!
Merry Christmas to all.
