Hi,
I'm using Delphi7 Enterprise and I am considering to buy Delphi8 .NET,
but at the present day I'm not thinking on moving all my applications to
..NET framework.
So, what I want to know is:

1 - What are really the main benefits to move to the .NET framework?

2 - About projects Longhorn and Avalon, will I benefit on moving to .NET as
soon as possible, e.g., right now, with Delphi8? I never miss a Delphi
version since Delphi2 and until the present day I allways took advantages
from this policy of mine.
With Delphi8, since that there isn't a Delphi8 for Win32, will I take any
risks if I do not move to .NET now, but later, regarding all my code and
future plataforms?

Thanks,

Yes, indeed a very important question.

->What will .NET do for us - especially for those of us not doing web
applications?

->Will D8.NET application e.g. run on a PDA?

->Is this the end of Borlands long time as the best compiler/IDE for native
Windows code (and Linux and DOS too, not to forget)?

->Will everything be .NET in the future?

->Can anyone guide us to an understandable list of all the benefits of .NET?

I am looking forward to some answers to these questions,

Jens.

Hi,

Delphi 8 is a marketing name. I would have prefer Delphi # 1.

It's Yet Another MS Marketing Ploy. There's nothing special about it at
all. Borland jumped on the bandwagon because Bill (one of their major
shareholders now) told them to.

The .NET name is a marketing gimmick. I don't do web applications, but .NET
is very exciting.

What it should have been called is "Win32 API++". What .NET is is a total
re-write of the Windows API, one that is now OOP, consistent and very
Delphi-like (after all, MS plucked Delphi creator from Borland to develop
that framework). The fact that they have made this API theoretically
portable to other platforms is nice, but the important thing is that .NET
means a thorough clean-up of the mess that is the current API. And, starting
with longhorn, the .NET framework will be "the" native Windows API.

In a sense it is funny that all the MS ads about .NET target web stuff and
end-users, because in my opinion, the one who will really benefit are
Windows developpers.

Hmm...

That's kind of what I expected. One question remians: Will .NET applications
developed with Delphi 8 run on a PDA? If so I might also consider start
playing with it.

It has not been certified for that, but Danny Thorpe has said that he has gotten
some Delphi apps to work with the compact framework (CE).
