|
|
Hi all,
I know this question has been discussed here before but I didn't pay much
attention because I wasn't in the market then. Google groups doesn't seem
to find much with any keywords I could think of using.
I'm in the market for a new laptop to be used primarily as a development
machine. I'll be working with Delphi 7 Pro, BDS 2006 Pro and possibly
VS.Net and/or SharpDevelop and probably JDeveloper or Netbeans. I may have
to run Oracle client software but probably not the actual RDBMS. Of course,
it will also be used for the usual word processing/spreadsheet and possibly
a little video/audio editing (got to work on those videos of my son). I
don't mind lugging around a slightly heavier machine.
I've started pricing Dells, Gateways, HPs and IBM/Lenovo. Anyone else I
should consider. I can get a really good deal on an IBM/Lenovo R43 Thinkpad
(fairly well loaded for about $1800) thanks to a deal between our university
and IBM. However, the frequent harddrive failures suffered by the machines
IBM is selling to the university for business use have made me a little
leary.
Opinions, recommendations?
Thanks,
--

We use IBM Notebooks at work, and we do not have any problems with them. |

I don't know much about the others, but I am in love with my new Dell
9400. Completely replaced my PC. (PC wasn't out of date either, I just
needed to be somewhat mobile)

The default drive might be a bit small anyway. (My trusty R40 has 80G now).

You might as well grab a 64bit Alienware
laptop at this point, so you have one with
a nice long life for development.
They get great reviews for support as well
as performance. After many Dell laptops,
(wich are fine) my next one will be from
Alienware.

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 8200 which has been great. But because I
currently have 2 hard drives in it (the second drive is for VMware), its
limiting my upgrade path as I need a notebook that'll support a second
drive. I'm currently looking to upgrade to a HyperSonic Aviator FX7.

Good question. I am in same boat and was considering Dell XPS M170,
but would like any others opinions as well. Anyone using the XPS? |

I just bought a Dell e1705/9400 which is very nice. My only complaint
is that the writing is a bit fine for my tired eyes.
Compaq's are cheaper than HPs (Buy direct) and are identical except
for the color.
Acer is pricing very competitively at the moment as long as you don't
need high end features like firewire and video out.
Gateway has a bad Rep for support.

I had a Toshiba laptop that was very good, in my opinion.
Also, if you are going to use D2006 Pro, and you want to use the Together-based
modeling and refactoring, put at least 2GB of RAM in the thing.

I'm very happy with the ibm t42 i bought last year for mobile dev work.
If ordering an IBM, go with an "express" model. These are their
preconfigured ones and are usually considerably cheaper. Also the T42/43 is
much nicer than the R series. The cheapest T42 express computer I see is
priced lower than the $1800 you mentioned and quite capable. However, it's
only comes with a 1024x768 screen.
In D7 that resolution is ok. Under D2006 though, it can feel a little narrow
with the side panels on both sides taking up lots of room. |

You don't explicitly need 64 bit capability, but it's probably a wise investment
for dev machine for the next 3 years. Only AMD Turions offer 64-bit capability
at the moment - Intel's Merom won't appear until the end of this year, or later.
HP has a line of Turion laptops, nx6125:

but they use the higher power ML Turions.
The Asus A6K line offers the lower power MT series Turions:
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=794&l1=5&l2=24&l3=0
but seems to be unavailable in the US.
There's also the Acer Ferrari, but that's really a gaming laptop, and you pay
for the horsie on the front cover.
cheers,
Mat |
