It has already happened once that I said to myself : "I should never use
Norton Antivirus again" ... This annoyance has started right from the moment
when I had *license expried* dialog box which appeared just because I have
disabled one of NAV's startup registry entries. Then I went through the
process of restoring everything. Deletion of one single registry entry
caused NAV completely stop functioning. What kind of protection is that?
Lately I have discovered a more, absolutely amazing thing with NAV. It does
protect my computer, can you bellieve it?, but one can never really imagine
which way it does that...
Have you ever heard of its ScriptBlocking Engine. It takes script protection
to an absolutely new, higher (but I fear, lower actually) level of
protection... by *disabling all script activity* even after the program a)
have the Enable Script Blocking option disabled b) removed from computer. :(

P.S. I know I should have listened to the guys telling me to use AVG Smile
Now that I am finished with Norton, I am trying to fix what it has done to
script engines, can anyone send me the exported regkey:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{72C24DD5-D70A-438B-8A42-98424B88AFB8} ?

Thanks in advance.

I've had a fairly painless experience with Trend Micro's PC-Cillin fwiw.

I'm happy user of Free AVG.

I use only "Norton Ghost" of Norton products which
generates a hard-copy of disk partition (for example).
That I need as system backup in case of emergency.

Note that this is all hearsay as I gave up on Norton Utilities when version
4 messed up my disk.

My friend told me that if you call them they will tell you the password,
algorithm or whatever it is which allows it to be removed from the machine.

I leave the issue to you of how one calls them from the area where the
pnz.ru domain is local without incurring large phone charges.

Norton AV slows things down badly. I've seen it on several machines. It
doesn't just slow down I/O either. Even web browsing is affected.

McAffee (what we use at work) only seems to impact I/O but still hits
you for around 15%. For a while I ran with the on-Access disabled to
improve compile times but sadly our IT department have stopped that by
rolling out security policy software :(

At home I use CA (still, somehow on the free trial on three machines
<g>) and although I can't comment on any I/O hit because I only play
games and browse the web it seems fine.

The one thing I like about it is that it's unobtrusive. I used the
McAffee home offering a couple of years ago and everytime it updated
its drivers it used to popup a modal balloon dialog to say so. This
used to yank me back to the desktop when I was playing a game
full-screen and it drove me mad.

I could see no point in such an intrusive dialog box since all I as a
user could do was click [Ok]. It put me in mind of a little kid
constantly seeking attention and asking for praise.

I mentioned this to their tech. support and they said that most users
seemed to like it!

Automated data recovery software is like DiY brain surgery. When it
works it can save you a lot of time and money. When it doesn't work
it's not so clever :)

We see a lot fewer problems with NTFS now. Something about its design
seems to mean that utilities don't get as confused as they used to.
With FATx d/r tools like Norton were a significant cause of no-fixes.

Norton for Macintosh can still do some truly bizarre things. Given the
complexity of that file system it sometimes beggars belief what
conclusions Norton can come to. I can only assume that whoever wrote it
was /not/ experienced in the field. They seem not to have the requisite
paranoia and distrust in their data.

Rule #1 for writing d/r software:If it looks odd it is probably wrong.
Rule #2:If it looks good it's probably also wrong

:)

Yep, it does slow down web browsing. If one marks an option (name I don't
remember exactly) to show auto-protect service messages, you can see
messages like "<program name> is waiting for a scan of <filename>. All the
messages I have seen while surfing was "iexplorer is waiting for
<somefile>.."
So I had the impression (and I think a true one) that Norton AV prevents the
program accessing a scanned file from using it and thus slowing down
program's perfomance. Other AV program don't prevent, they only track which
files are used but they don't have this "you can't access the file until I
scan it" behavior relating to real time scanning. They don't first prevent
programs from using the file, they only scan files being used. That's what I
think makes NAV slow down things (in comparison to other programs). But at
the sime time (in this aspect only) Norton AV seems to provide more security
in comparison to other AV programs.

I don't use McAfee AV but I have their firewall. Guess what's the first new
feature listed in the "New Features" list?
<quote>
a.. Improved Gaming Support
Personal Firewall protects your computer from intrusion attempts and
suspicious activities during full-screen gameplay, but can hide alerts if it
detects intrusion attempts or suspicious activities. Red Alerts appear after
you exit the game.

Trend Micro PC-Cillin allows you to configure whether the pop-up dialogs will
interrupt you.
