Has anyone here used a drive repair or data recovery service that they
would recommend? Yesterday all was well, and today, I have a drive that
won't spin up. :(

OnTrack isn't necessarily cheap but they do very good work and have
great customer service.

Sometimes it's the electronics circuit board that goes bad.
I was successful before buying an exact model number new
hard drive, and carefully swapping the circuit board with
the bad drive.

But other times, something goes bad inside the sealed case.
Do not open that if you don't know what you are doing,
and if you know what you are doing, do it in a clean room.

In the future consider using a fault tolerant disk system
(such as RAID with mirroring), and back up often.

Another possibility is that your power supply is beginning to fail and produces
not enough power to spin up the drive. Try it in another machine.

When the drive doesn't spin up, chances are good that the
data is not yet lost.
Stay away from prestigeous companies such as Vogon. I once
sent them a disk and was charged 300$ or so to get an expertise.
The expertise was that a recovery was possible for 5000$.
I had them send me the drive back and instead tried to recover
the data from backups. A bunch of files here, another bunch
there. Neatly distributed amongst many CDs.

Already tried another power supply, as I had a spare. No joy.

Try putting it in a fridge for an hour - I joke you not. Try Ben's advice
too, or alternately (I'm not recommending this btw - just something I read)
- drop it a couple of feet on to something SOFT.

Ask Andrue Cope. He might know someone. <g>

That was an advice Andrue gave as well.

Well, it turns out that I was wrong -- it does spin, but the heads are
moving in and out repeatedly, and apparently not finding what they need
to let the drive park them :(
