I was successful before buying an exact model number new hard drive, and carefully swapping the circuit board with the bad drive. But other times, something goes bad inside the sealed case. Do not open that if you don't know what you are doing, and if you know what you are doing, do it in a clean room. In the future consider using a fault tolerant disk system (such as RAID with mirroring), and back up often. Stay away from prestigeous companies such as Vogon. I once sent them a disk and was charged 300$ or so to get an expertise. The expertise was that a recovery was possible for 5000$. I had them send me the drive back and instead tried to recover the data from backups. A bunch of files here, another bunch there. Neatly distributed amongst many CDs.
