errors closing a project
I'm using BC++builder 6
With 2 project I experieced a strange problem.
If I open the project , compile and close it I got the following sequence of
errors:

---I press Ok---
Access violation at adress 00574097 inmodule 'coreide60.bpl'. read of
address 00000030.
---I press Ok---
The menu is no more accessible, if I try to press some menu's item I get
again:
Access violation at adress 00574097 inmodule 'coreide60.bpl'. read of
address 00000030.
--- now I close BC++builder 6 pressing the cross on the upper left of the
ide ---
I got this error:
Access violation at address 005A7ABF in module 'coreide60.bpl'. Read of
address 00000070
Save anyway ?
--- I press the YES button ---
I got the error ( in italia so I try a translation ):
The instruction 0x0000000 is referred to memory at address 0x00000000.
The memory couldn't be read.
Press OK to END the application
--- I press the OK button ---
Exception EAccessViolation in module rtl60.bpl at 0000000.
Access violation at address 0000000. Read of address 0000000.
--- I press the OK button ---
I got the error ( in italia so I try a translation ):
The instruction 0x40008f98 is referred to memory at address 0x031b3fd4.
The memory couldn't be read.
--- I press the OK button and finally the BCB IDE end ---
I 'll ask if some other peole have experienced such sort of problem and
some solkution will be founded ?

Enzo Arlati

An occasional AV on shutdown is just part of normal Builder behaviour
I'm afraid. What you describe though goes beyond that and sounds like a
third party IDE add-on misbehaving.
Have installed any packages recently?

Agree... I live with BCB IDE crashes, and I used to them.

I have installed midware+ics ( a Piette suite ), calssExplorer and GExpert
but all these worked well from some time.
one think to consider is that the 2 project which give me some trouble have
ole automatione interface.
Shoud these cause some problem ?

I don't know.
Fresh out of the box the Builder IDE will occasionally AV while code
browsing and sometimes at shutdown. If you disable Class Explorer it
won't normally AV while browsing but will still occasionally AV on
shutdown.
From what you are describing your installation of Builder is less
stable than normal and from that I deduce that things have been added
to it that aren't normally present on a fresh install. Unfortunately
only you know what you've added and only you can track the problem down
since it appears to only affect you.
If it were a fresh install I'd say get rid of Class Explorer but if
it's been running okay for a while then I'm out of ideas.

Well since there's a thread for it, I suppose I'll vent.
What crap. I can't believe this product was allowed to continue to exist
in this state. I mean access violations as part of "normal" behavior.
Out of pride for my work I think I'd release AT A MINIMUM a patch to fix
this.
But alas, it is what I'm forced to work with.
cheers,
tim

If you remove Class Explorer, AVs from the IDE drop dramatically. I
usually only get them after an intensive day's debugging. On average I
might get one or two a week. Given what the IDE is being put through by
me I find that acceptable. They very rarely interfere with my
productivity and given the incredible productivity gains that Builder
provides me I can excuse it a few minor wrinkles.

If I remove Class Explorer? As in stop using it altogether? Is that
really acceptable for you? I would rather deal with more AVs instead of
jettisoning the CE.
At any rate, nothing is perfect, I just meant that as long as the
Builder has been out it's still a very visible problem that clearly
effects a large segment (if not all) of the users.
cheers,
tim

Well firstly if the CE is the source of AVs in the IDE (and many of us
think it is the biggest culprit) then you should take that up with the
company that wrote it and that *isn't* Borland :)
But FWIW, yes, I can live without CE. I have tried using class
explorers in several IDEs now and I just can't get on with them. I even
downloaded the latest version of CE Prof (now free) but I just couldn't
see the point. I prefer to change my classes manually. It may just be
that I have a very good memory for source code and I can usually
navigate myself to the right place quicker than I could using an
explorer.

Agreed. There are several areas of the existing IDE that are irritating
to users. We just have to hope that the BDS proves to be a more stable
IDE. Sadly from the comments I've seen/heard floating around we might
be hoping in vain.

Well I think that would really spell disaster for Borland. This is their
last opportunity, in my book, to make things right. I was hired at my
current place of employment and forced to work with Builder 6. However,
I am now in a position to force development of our current offering in
different environments. If BDS is not a monumental leap in every area, I
will start pushing our Borland product use out the door. :(
cheers,
tim

That's pretty much my position as well. Since becoming a member of
TeamB I've had close enough contact with Borland to dispel any idea of
them being malicious or incompetent. It's just that sometimes their
decisions differ from what a lot of us here need and the way they
present that to us is extremely poor.
Things are looking better than they have for a long time now so
hopefully they can regain our trust.
Follow-up set to .non-technical
