I am looking for an little application that searchs the harddisks and
determs the compiler used to build the exe-files.
Output would be a list or a pie chart.
For me its not so interesting how many programmers are using which
programming languages.
Its more interesting which programming languages were used to build
successfull applications.

Currently, there are approximately 10,000,000 Developers worldwide in 2002:
1,000,000 Borland Users
2,000,000 Java Developers
2,000,000 C/C++ Developers
5,000,000 Visual Basic Developers (some will now migrate to .NET, Delphi or
Java)

So do JBuilder developers fall under "Borland Users" or "Java Developers"?
Are C++Builder developers "Borland Users" or "C/C++ Developers"?
How do 1,000,000 Borland users divide up into Delphi, or JBuilder or
C++Builder developers? I suspect the number includes all three and I further
suspect that Delphi is less than 1/3 of the total.

Since there are a bunch of questions regarding this data, let me say that I
don't know what the data actually means, I just posted it. Statistics are
statistics. <g>
I suggest that you ask the source of the information or purchase something
like Evans Data if you want a more accurate count (I have not purchased the
data and don't think you could share it if you did purchase it anyway).

Just for the fun of it you should read this...

In MS dreams <G>. |
All survey data (including Borland's own internal data) show Java use in the
Enterprise to be at 70%. NET is no where near this number.
Of course this is per Enterprises, and not small mom and pop shops, nor
independent developers.

have to count a good portion of java users as Borland users, as well.

That would be an interesting shareware app - it would also be interesting to
apply it to particular programs where you are wondering what they are made
in.
Also interesting would be if it could pick up and recognise 3rd party
packages used by the program and databases used by the program.
Please let me know by email when you have developed and are sharing this.
Also another feature suggestion: you could develop some sort of web archive
which lists the various programs, their versions, and what they were made
with, and when your program analyses someones HD and gets results, it could
then go online and update the central archive site accordingly.

I ran across the numbers above yesterday. It seems odd, though, that they
claim 1 million "Borland" users. What do they
mean--Delphi,JBuilder,C++Builder, etc.? If so, there are no JBuilder and
C++Builder developers, as there are (reportedly) 1 million Delphi
developers. It's also strange that the first number is a company, while the
remaining three are languages. What gives?
