We are evaluating development environments to migrate our system to.
(About 470,000 lines of Informix 4GL code). This system will be used
at a private college to do administration, etc. It will require both
web and local desktop apps. Parts will need to be multi-platform as
well (on Linux, for instance). How well will Delphi meet these needs?
For those who have developed in other dev environments, why do you
prefer Delphi over others?

Is Delphi .NET capable of this project?

Note: I am a Delphi programmer as well. But have not
done much multi-platform and web apps. Was wanting other opinions
besides mine to present to our team.

Thanks

Yes but multiplatform may be a problem.

In theory it can use Mono to run Delphi .NET applications.
However, Mono does not yet support full Winforms functionality.

What parts need to run on Linux ?
Have you looked at Qt ?

The only problem can be if Multitier is equal to a GUI application. if
the "multitier" part is a server application MUST go fine.

But, if you for example build a Win32 Delphi CLIENT then can go with
Wine (and if test early, you must be fine). Also, yoiu can use Kylyk (is
in hold now but is a option) or test with Mono (but the GUI, again, is
not strong)

My advice is look at www.remobjects.com or www.msgconnect.com. Both can
help you in do this easily and fast.

Anyaway, i think Delphi is great for your proyect.

These are good recommendations. However I believe the server for both of
these currently has to be Win 32. RemObjects are working on their .net
servers, due later this year. I guess it depends on how commited he is to
..net.

Personally I'd do a new project in Delphi for Win 32 now, and think about
starting new projects in .net or porting projects in a couple of years -
particularly since he says he already has Delphi for Win 32 skills. But
maybe he has business reasons (eg bosses) that need it to be in .net now.
