To Borland:
I am reading with horror about Borland's plans for C++ and VCL. I have no
desire to use .NET, if I did, I would use Microsoft tools. VCL and the
Delphi-family (incl BCB and Kylix) IDE were the assets that made me to use
BCB.
If BCB-X offered all the GUI power of BCB today and if there were a robust
BCB===>BCB-X migration tool, BCB-X would be a great product. As it is,
BCB-X is not worth much, I can be as productive with Emacs and DDD (a
debugger GUI). As it is, BCB-X is completely useless to me.
What happened to Kylix / Qt / CLX? What will Borland come up with 6 month
from now? I am afraid of another revolutionary offering.
Here is what I am going to do:
I will use BCB 6 as long as possible, then I will switch to another
GUI-development tool. Unless Borland changes its ways, I doubt that it will
be a Borland tool. Next week I am starting in-depth evaluation of
Qt-Designer from Trolltech.

Borland didn't announce anything conclusive about that, yet, so there is
hope (see below).
It may have been missed by many, since it is at the bottom, but the Open
Letter says:
"We recognize the importance of your investment in VCL technologies and
will provide further details on native VCL support in and migration to
C++BuilderX in a follow-up Open Letter within these next few weeks."
But it also says:
"Given these two long term strategies we solicit your input/comments on
how we can best protect your investment in this area and we encourage
your comments and recommendations on how we can continue to serve your
software development needs. Do not hesitate to use QualityCentral or to
email us (cpp_open_letter (AT) borland (DOT) com) directly to provide insight on
your challenges and requirements for your current and future C++
projects."
So I think everyone with an interest in the continuation of the VCL for
Win32, and a designer that can be used in the CBX IDE, ought to write to
that email address,
cpp_open_letter (AT) borland (DOT) com
and tell Borland what they expect from them. The more people, the better.

Thanks for pointing this out. I for one will indeed write to Borland as you
suggest, but I would think that if they were reading this newsgroup they
would have got the message by now.
1) The top priority for BCB users is that code that compiles today on
BCB6 will continue to compile on successor products for at least 5 years.
2) Building a cross platform product is an excellent idea, but without
full support for VCL / CLX code and a GUI designer its useless.

In case you didn't know: this is just a peer support group. Borland
management doesn't regularly read this group. Some members of DevRel
appear here, but you can't count on that. Don't forget that this is a
special Borcon, going on right now.

It is perhaps useless for you. It may not be useless for many C++
developers who have never used BCB or the VCL. After all, it contains a
nice selection of compilers, an IDE, and perhaps soon, a RAD environment
for cross-platform wx.
