From the Borland Delphi Roadmap
http://bdn.borland.com/article/0,1410,33383,00.html#4DelphiHighlander

"The current plan is to release Highlander in calendar year 2006, with
tech preview builds available for download by registered Delphi
customers shortly after .NET 2.0 is released."

It's now been over 4 months since .NET 2 was shipped. Where are the tech
preview builds? Any plans on a release dates etc.?

Updated release plan:

It was all discussed in a thread called "Borland DevCon 2006 Tokyo / Mar

I believe that is being updated soon. Planned release date for
Highlander is something like Q1 2007.

Currently Delphi is fighting against the higher Borland management.
I estimate a 2 year delay....

I don't se why they don't get a release out by June/July this year with .net
2 support + D2006 bugfixes, and deliver the native Win64 support, Vista
support etc another 6 months after that. Otherwise the latter can hold back
the former, which is already running late . . .

After all, Borland were meant to have the .net 2 support already done and
were just waiting for the MS official release . . .

My 2c.

Why 6 months delay?

It's not like all development stops because IDE tools are looking for a
buyer. Development staff would still get on with their day jobs, and dream
about the future on the side . . .

The original plan was "during 2006". If it was Q4 2006 (which ISTR it
being the plan), Q1 2007 is not 6 months.

Looking for a buyer is not the only reason why plans change.

My recollection is that when Danny Thorpe put up the anticipated
timelines to last years ADUG symposium in Melbourne the anticiapted
release date for Highlander was mid 2006. It was meant to just
contain essentially .net 2 support and some extras depending on .net
2 (IDE improvements etc).

Thanks for the info. The delay might be explained by what seems to be
more added to it, eg VCL for CF, ECO for VCL.NET etc.

Of course that doesn't help those waiting for .NET 2.0 support :-/

I'm kind of in the same boat; I would like to choose BDS, but can't.
That is unless someone can tell me how to take advantage of ASP.NET 2.0
with BDS 2006, without much effort.

It doesn't help converting newcomers over to Delphi either. I am the
lead in a large ASP.NET application we are working on written in Delphi.
One of the new guys who has no real history or bias in IDE's (he's a
recent graduate) cant understand why I chose delphi instead of VS
considering it doesn't even support .NET 2.0 yet.

I also feel screwed. I bought D2006 (which I've not even opened yet)

This reminds me of a commercial that airs frequently here in the States,
where an executive explains that the money he is saving on his cellular
plan is his way of "sticking it to the man", to which an underling
replies, "But sir, you ARE the man. So aren't you really just sticking it
to yourself?"

ROFLMAO!!

I agree that they should release an update with .Net 2.0 support, ASAP.

Quote:

After all, Borland were meant to have the .net 2 support already done and
were just waiting for the MS official release . . .

And, from Danny Thorpe's blog(Dated Sept. 27, 2005):

[Start Quote...]
The current plan is to release Highlander in calendar year 2006. We're
considering releasing tech preview builds for download by registered Delphi
customers shortly after .NET 2.0 is released, but that will depend largely
upon how quickly we can get the raft of new language syntax nailed down, and
upon when Microsoft gets around to actually shipping .NET 2.0.

As always, these plans are subject to change.

[...End Quote]

And, here's another comment from Danny Thorpe from that same blog(dated:
Sept 28, 2005):

[Start Quote...]
"I kind of read into this that Borland is doing lots of waiting on Microsoft
to finish up .NET 2.0, but this could hardly be true. .NET 2.0 has been
stable for some time now."

Borland cannot ship product on .NET 2.0 beta. Microsoft has made that very
clear. We pushed hard to get license to distribute Borland product with .NET
2.0 beta bits on the CD, but Microsoft flatly refused.

Apparently the only development tools that are allowed to include .NET beta
bits are Microsoft tools.

My snide remark about if and when .NET 2.0 actually ships is in regard to
the many revisions to the .NET 2.0 release date. Originally (2002), .NET 2.0
was scheduled to ship in 2004. In the spring of 2004, Microsoft announced
the ship date had been pushed back to June 2005. In February 2005, Microsoft
announced the ship date for .NET 2.0 had been pushed out to end-of-year
2005. As we approach end-of-year 2005, it seems very likely they will
finally hit that target, but it's always the case that you should never bank
on Microsoft hitting any date.

We originally intended to release tools for .NET 2.0 in 2005. However, .NET
2.0 slipped out of our release window, and Microsoft refused to let us
release on .NET beta bits, so we adjusted our priorities to create DeXter on
..NET 1.1.

[...End Quote]

So, for those that have suggested that Borland could've played with .Net 2.0
beta and be ready for .Net 2.0 release. It seemed almost impossible to do
that without having bits of .Net 2.0 beta in preleases of BDS 2006. So,
basically it could've only been tested internally without any external
testers, and I'm sure that tool developers wouldn't have been happy to see
..Net 2.0 support, but without having access to it prior to the release.
Also, not knowing when .Net 2.0 would've been released, it would've meant
that the release of BDS 2006 was uncertain(who knows it could've meant 3-6
months after .Net 2.0 release). And, reading Danny's comments, it is
apparent that Borland tried hard to be able to ship with .Net 2.0. But, now
it seems that it will be the new DevCo that will be shipping the next
Developer Studio with .Net 2.0 support. And, my guess, the faster a deal is
struck and the faster that the new DevCo wants to release under their name,
hopefully they will want to release support for .Net 2.0 at the same time.
