I've looked in the registry and inside files and still there must be
some kind of "Hiden" place where BDS 2006 keeps that string; can it be
changed, or do I have to live with it? I surely don't like *not* to be
in control of what goes on in my computer, but if there's no other
way...

I've created a user override for $(BDS) and added another $(DEV) to use
in path dialogs instead, and most things work, but New Projects still
"want" to be placed there...

Thanks,
Fernando Madruga

Hint for Borland or the new company: next version, create a reg setting
and allow the user to choose WHERE that folder goes and how it's named!
Just because I'm running XP, doesn't mean I want EVERYTHING inside My
Documents...

Not hidden at all. Tools | Options | Environment options | Environment
variables. Override BDSPROJECTSDIR. That should do it.

Not quite: it's not hidden, but in some cases it's ignored... I did
that as the very 1st thing I tried, but when I start a new project I
still get prompted to save it into "...\Borland Studio Projects\Project
name", therefore completely ignoring the override... I would rather
have source code for projects *not* in my Documents folder, but I'm
starting to believe it won't be possible...

Thanks anyway,
Fernando Madruga

Even though it prompts you to save it there, there is no
reason why you can't save it in another directory.

I keep my D2006 projects in subdirectories under
"My Documents\My Programs\D10 W32" or
"My Documents\My Programs\D10.NET"
depending on the project type.

Yes, that is true, but since it keeps on re-creating that folder, I
decided to give up and use it instead. "If you can't beat them, join
them..."

Also, some 3rd party utilities have trouble when the "Borland Studio
Projects\Bpl" is not there, so until Borland, or the new company,
decide to allow customizing that folder and implement a reg key or
something that other tools/installers can read to find out where that
folder is stored, I'm simply doing things "their" way and have now
modified my backup procedure to exclude that folder, as it has a
different backup schedule than "My Documents".

It's ok to me to have my own projects there, but, since I use two accounts
for using BDP I would liked to have all bpl-files in a common area for all
users, like \My Documents\All users\Shared Documents\BDS 4.0\bpl

Would that be possible in future versions of BPL (if there are being some
new versions made in future)?

Another reason is also that if several users use the same components
installed, copying lots of these for each user consume a lot of hard disk
space. Not everyone has a 100 GB harddisk on his/her laptop.

Hi Fernando,

Can't help but to agree that the default to My Documents is a bit
annoying...

What I have found is that I've 1/2 given in to this... I used to manually
change my folders to \temp\ for all my prototyping and temp code, but now I
just let BDS do it's little thing and it's happy to put junk there. Every
couple of weeks, I manually go in an blast it all away.

Everything I need to keep is put into dev folders on my server so that our
production code is not mixed up with my own testing mix.

There is a key to solve this.
In BDS folder in HKEY_CURRENT_USER you will find a Globals key;
The key/value to look for is "DefaultProjectsDirectory", if it is not there,
just add a new String Value with this name and point to your directory;
Works also for Delphi2005;
