Hi,

I become a little bit crazy with BDE administrator.
I have to crate new entries (or modify one) in BDE admin and save it to
"idapi32.cfg" simple and easy !

Each time I try to "Apply" what I have done, BDE freeze ...

If I try to save to another ".CFG" it freeze.

BUT the best is that if I do "open configuration" I see files (for instance
I create a backup of the cfg called "idapi32 initial.cfg") that NO LONGER
EXIST within the BDE directory. I delete them and empty my "recycle bin"
!!!!
I try to restart, shutdown my computer, search my computer for the files ...
THEY DON'T EXIST ... and BDE/Open configuration continue to show them !!!

I search the registry for the file name and don't find them. How is this
possible ?
How can I get back my BDE working ? (and not showing me deleted files !!!)

Can I re-install using Delphi 2006 install DVD ? and just "deselect BDE" and
then "reselect BDE" without re-installing all Delphi 2006 ?

Waiting for your help ...

Thanks !

Hello Pierre,

Look for c:\windows\odbc.ini.

One more thing ...

What BDe display show (aliases and options) are NOT what it is in the file
"idapi32.cgf" !!!
I try to re-install in an other directory and keep same problem !!

I make the test to open BDE with default "idapi32.cfg" then replace it with
a "idapi32.cfg" with all my aliases re-open BDE admi, ... and it keep
showing the first file !!!!
I really don't understand how he can do that !
And still showing deleted files even after I re-install !!

Hi,

Thanks but odbc.ini hold information about odbc file you define ... not
aliases wtihin BD (indeed you see all odbc files ...).
My problem is that BDE freeze directly after I click "apply" and that he
show me deleted files wihin the bde directory.
Also, I can't open an other configuration (see my second message) and even I
replace the file within the directory he show me the content of the old one.
.... and YES I'm sure to that I'm not mixing directories !
Certainly a problem in the registry (but which one ?) or some ini files ...

Hello Pierre again,
If you have both 16-bit and 32-bit BDE installed, there is should be an
idapi.cfg file. I had similar kind of problems a few years ago.

What operatin system are you using?

What version of the BDE are you using (the version number of
idapi32.dll)?

What is the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Borland\Database
Engine\ConfigFile01?

What is the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Borland\Database
Engine\DllPath?

If you're running the BDE Admin program under Microsoft Vista, run it as an
administrator by right clicking on the .exe. This will eliminate a lockup
of the sort you describe.

it also could be the "screen-color"-problem:
if you have your screen on 16 colors , you'll get problems with BDEAdmin (
and perhaps even with your application )
set it at least at 256 colors

Hi,

I use Vista RTM, latest BDE (5.2.0.2).

I finally discover 2 things YOU HAVE TO DO :

- use the options to save settings for Win31 AND Win95
- run BDE administrator as administrator even if you are an administrator !!

What is unbelievable is where BDe can find information (and save some !!!)
you have delete. That I can't understand.

Thanks to all of you and Happy new year

Pierre

:ps: I have an other problem now ... first I'll search the newsgroup !!

Hi,

See my answer below (an other message).

The keys are correct first point to the BDE directory\idapi32.cfg and second
also (without the "idapi32.cfg" Smile )

Create a new bdeadmin.exe.manifest file to same directory where your
bdeadmin exists.
Put this in Manifest file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
<assemblyIdentity version="1.0.0.0"
processorArchitecture="X86"
name="BDEadmin"
type="win32" />
<description>BDEadmin </description>
<trustInfo xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3">
<security>
<requestedPrivileges>
<requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator" />
</requestedPrivileges>
</security>
</trustInfo>
</assembly>

Next time you start bdeadmin you dont have to start is as administrator, the
manifest takes care that it starts as real administrator .

Would something like thist also work with bdeadmin.cpl? And would it be
possible to insert this manifest into bdeadmin as additional resource?

I think this is because of the file virtualization and registry
virtualisation in Vista. It's just taken me all day to work out what's
happening.

It seems under Vista if you try to write to a file under \program files
and you're NOT running with elevated Administrator permission, then
Vista virtualises the file/keys you're saving.

So say John (a user) runs the BDEAdmin from the control panel, he
changes the NETDIR setting, when he saves, as he doesn't have elevated
admin rights, Vista will create a copy of say IDAPI32.CFG in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore\IDAPI32.CFG.

If John runs another app which needs to read IDAPI32.CFG Vista will
cleverly use the Virtualised copy for him.

John logs out of the PC and Fred logs in.

Problem is now, if fred (also a regular user) now runs a BDE app, his
app won't be aware of the changes John made, so his app will have the
wrong NETDIR setting. If Fred now runs the BDEAdmin, changes NETDIR and
saves changes, his BDE app will work, but he will have his own
virtualised copy of the IDAPI32.CFG. So any changes either user makes
via the BDE Admin will only change their copy of the CFG file.

Now just to make matters worse, if an Admin now comes along to fix the
problem of each user having a different NETDIR, if he runs the BDE
Admin with elevated Admin rights, he will ammend the IDAPI32.CFG in
\program files\common files etc, but this will have no affect on the
IDAPI32.CFG files that both John and Fred use.

At least I think this is right. I've been experimenting today after
finding BDE settings appearing in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore and
reading these two Microsoft articles.
download.microsoft.com/download/5/6/a/56a0ed11-e073-42f9-932b-38acd478f46d/WindowsVistaUACDevReqs.doc

It sounds like the best solution under Vista is to move IDAPI32.CFG to
a more accessible location.
