|
|
The harddrive on my notebook gave up a few days ago
and I got a new one (drive).
For several reasons I installed Vista on the machine
and now I have to install my TC++ Pro licence.
Is there a way to uninstall the licence I had on my old
drive (it still boots but the amount of bad blocks
severly hinders me from doing any real work) ??
I have installed TC++ on my desktop PC at work and on
my notebook (used at home and "on the road").
This makes for two installations.
Without any deinstallation installing on Vista
increases my count to 3.
While this is probably no problem it does makes me think
what will happen in the future. In a year or two I might
have passed a few disks/machines and the installed count
might rise above what CG think is resonable.
Hopefully, I'll use some sort of C++ Builder/TC 2007/2008
then but if for some reason I hang on to my old version ??

AIUI, we'll bump the number of allowed installs with just a phone
call.

And we're back to the question of what happens if/when CodeGear isn't
around 'in a few years'.
I've worked for lots of places over the years, some distinct companies,
some divisions of major corporations. I've also worked as a consultant
for a number of places. Of all those places that I've EVER worked, over
thirty years, only ONE even exists today. Many of them don't even exist
as physical locations any more (one of my early jobs for a division of
Xerox was bulldozed and is now a car dealership, another major aerospace
plant is now a Chinese bank, etc.)
This is a separate and distinct issue from whether or not CodeGear is
'doing the right thing' and will survive based on their actions -- they
are just as likely to die because they're bought by a company that
proceeds to 'kill' aspects of the product line. You can look at that in
the compiler industry itself, let alone in other parts of the software
industry (let alone in industry in general).
So, while the 'phone call' solution "sounds" nice, it's NOT a solution
to the overall, long-term problem.

And what about non-english-spoken customers or customers from countries
where phone call to US is a huge expense ?
Is that bump possible e.g. after sending an email ?

So you working for a company should be considered a kiss of death ;-)

Agreed. However, once a company dies then the hackers (much like scavengers
in the desert) can come out of their hiding and legally release their
activation hacks.

There are numbers all over the world, but you can also handle
installation and registration issues online:

And that horse has been beaten into the ground on the Delphi news
groups. You should realize that I have no control over that. Nick and
the other managers are aware of the concerns about product activation. I
hope they can find a more customer friendly solution. Until they do,
we'll do as much as we can to help people who are having trouble.

And it's been beaten into the ground because there has been no public
response to support the supposition that escrow even exists.
Unless and until satisfactory answers are given to such questions (and
note the word 'satisfactory'), you can expect to see customers
continuing to beat the horse (because to us, it's not dead, merely
'resting').

What I was trying to say is that piling on me about this issue when I
post trying to help someone isn't going to help resolve the issue. I
agree that the answers you've been given by management aren't
satisfactory.

And I appreciate your help, appreciate the situation your in, am very
glad you're on the CodeGear side of the fence, and thank you for all
that you do. (Really!)
I probably wouldn't have jumped in if you'd said something like
"...presently we'll bump the number of allowed installs..." (note that
'presently' has been added to your statement) -- this would have
acknowledged that customer concerns about the future have some merit,
while addressing the present-day situation.
I'm very happy that CodeGear currently bumps up (or resets, whichever)
the number of allowed installs when able to discuss it with the
customer. Given the current situation, that's probably the best way to
handle this (for most people). And I realize this is picking nits on
what you said, but I really don't want folks to lose sight of the
'future' concerns of customers.
I don't really think we're in disagreement on this one... <G>
