Hi Everybody,
I have been reading the postings about upgrade paths here and whatever
article that mentions it at CodeGear. I have been in contact with the local
reseller as well, but I still havent got a good answer to this question.
First, let me explain my requirement. We have a large codebase that we are
compiling simultaneously in win32 and .net using D2005. Now we need to
upgrade to a version that supports both win32 and .net.
Ofcourse we can go for D2006, but then we will miss out on D2007. So, we
came up with the idea of upgrading to D2006 with a maintenance plan so that
we will get D2007 when it comes out (as a whole). Alas, there seem to be a
rule in Borland (or codegear) that does not allow one to use the maintenance
agreement to get an upgrade to an already existing version. So if we get
d2006 now with the maintenance option, we will only get D2008 (provided it
comes out within an year, which is very very unlikely looking at the current
state of things).
So I started calling Borland, sending mails to Nick and some other dude in
sales, without any response.
It looks like things have only gone down at Codegear. Why is it so hard to
give some information to developers about the expected dates of release of
the software? I sure am not the only one who has to make plans for new
release cycles and make technology decisions. But with this kind of response
(or lack thereof) and really weird upgrade strategies, how is one supposed
to make this decision?
I have been a Delphi developer from D1, and always (atleast until D2005)
recommended Delphi at par with VS offerings as viable options for new
projects. But, from what I am seeing now, I will not be doing that anymore.
May be in a few years Codegear will make me change my mind. I hope they
will. In the meantime is there someone in the newsgroup with any useful
information?

codegear seem to have a harsh spam bucket, cant blame them myself, I
get enough spam, I cant imagine how much people like Nick must get.
try http://blogs.codegear.com/nickhodges/contact.aspx see if that
results in the same

I'm sorry you didn't get a response from me -- I have a couple of
emails from you requesting to get on the Highlander field test, and I
thought I replied. I'm sorry if you never heard from me.

Well, sadly, it is very hard, given the current laws and accounting
rules. We hate it, and are trying to find a way around it all, but as
it stands right now, we can't publish a roadmap.
If you want to send me another email, I can point you in the right
direction of our sales folks who can probably get you what you want.
