I am using a downloaded Visual C++ Express version and I would like to know if Borland has a C++Builder 2006 Express that I can use.

That's too bad. Borland should come up
with a similar Express version for BCB
so more people can fall in love with
the product. M$ claims to have over
a million download of the Express family,
people sometimes buy what they learn.
Thanks for the information. |

Borland announced last week that *all* of its IDE products are going to be
sold off to another company. Borland will no longer be maintaining the IDEs
directly anymore. The new company will be. So, once that company has been
decided on, you would have to take the issue up with that company instead of
with Borland. Since the IDEs will be getting new resources and more focused
attention, I imagine that what you ask for will be in a better position to
fall into the realm of possibility.

So the inference I should draw from this is that all work on BDS has (or
should) stop at this point, because Borland has announced their
intention to sell it?
If investors want to buy the company, are they likely to buy it if the
product has had a spear put through its heart, or will they be more
comfortable if there is actually a market (i.e., supported, happy
customers) for the product that they want the investors to sell???
This statement makes ZERO sense. If BDS is to continue, whether under
the Borland banner or by another entity who buys it from Borland, then
it is imperative that the product continue to be supported and marketed.
If/when it is decided that there is no interested buyer, and Borland
then decides not to continue with the product (with no buyer available),
then and only then should support/marketing of the product cease.
If the developers within Borland are truly 'excited' about this 'new
opportunity' to continue with the IDE, I would fully expect to see lots
of support to come out (and without too much delay). After all, the
developers who are seen as active/producing product would be those most
likely to be retained, and any positive activity on the product makes
for a more likely sale of the company.
In my estimation, if we don't see active support of the current product,
RIGHT NOW, which would include bug fixes, and massive fixes to the
help/documentation, then you might as well just put a fork in it,
because it's done.

No, that is not the inference you should draw. They have said they would
come out with a trial version and an Update 2 anytime soon. There is no
need to stop anything. Only the owner will change, not the products or
the people working on them.

No, we're still here working on it and, as Rudy has mentioned, a trial
edition is coming as is an update.

It *is* continuing to be developed, sold, and marketed.

The plans that had been laid down prior to the announcement are continuing
as normal. We have no plans to slow down or stop because of the latest
news.

All of that is great news (and what I would expect).
What is being lost sight of is that I was responding to Remy, who stated
(in response to a question about an Express version):

His statement clearly infers that Borland will not be continuing work on
such an item, and that it is pointless to discuss it with Borland until
a new buyer is found.
Please take MY statement in its proper context.

Like they said they'd come out with the list of fixes
included in BCB6 service packs? Or more like those
survey results? Or like they said they'd come out with
fixes, an EDG-based compiler, wxWidgets support etc.
for CBX? Or...
I believe in what's delivered.

Just wait and see. What will you do as soon as Update 2 and the trial
version come out? Eat your (or someone's) hat?

Hmm, I think it is possible that one of us is misreading it. ISTM,
that he said they will be continuing to do their work as usual until the
buyer is found.

This time I think it's you who owes me an apology (<G>). I reposted his
response IN ITS ENTIRETY. I'm not going to post it a third time, go
back and reread it. Nowhere did he make any such statement, in fact he
specifically said "Borland will no longer be maintaining the IDEs
directly anymore."
Other people have stated that work as usual will continue, but NOWHERE
is that found in HIS statement.

I can understand your mistrust. I got burned by CBX as well.
(Although it still has its uses) I think that a lot has changed
recently, and they are delivering on promises. I am confident that they
will deliver a trial version. I hope it is soon.

You are correct, Remy's statement does sound a little bleaker than my
original reading. But I think that the confusion comes from the fact
that what he said will be true after the sale. I suspect that he
mistakenly forgot that (important) part.
