Hello,

my application (still Delphi 5) uses "Video for Windows" to play some
AVI files (codec: MP42 Name: S-Mpeg 4 version 2)

This works fine on Win2000 and WinXP.
But on Windows Vista, I get the an MCI error "Codec not installed" -
while other applications like the Windows Mediaplayer can play these
AVI files.
The same MCI error is shown, if I use the TMediaPlayer component.

Does someone have a hint for me?
Do VfW and the Mediaplayer use different codecs at windows vista?
Which codec has to be installed for VfW?

You can download an example AVI file at http://www.dancepatterns.com/tmp/test.zip.

Thanks for your help

Markus

That example works fine for me. However, I take it upon myself to install the
K-Lite Codec pack from http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm and I very
rarely have "missing codec" problems. According to Media Player Classic
(playing your dance AVI now!), and Windows Explorer under XP SP2, it is
"Video: MS MPEG4 v2 320x240 24.00fps 36Kbps [Stream 00]". Can these codecs be
installed under Vista? If not, why upgrade? And all those newbs with their
pre-OS'd PCs with no OS CD/DVD to restore from, hopelessly interwoven into the
Wow factor under Vista. Wow, it doesn't work!

Another example is how IE7 is worse than IE6. See my hangman page at
http://www.jacobsm.com/hangman.htm for an explanantion. Regards,

mediaplayer has been using DirectX codecs for quite some time, also on
win2k/xp. DirectX and VfW require separate sets of codecs.
