oh my....
I am currently (finally) doing a Computing and Information Systems
degree course here in Trinidad. I do not have a degree or any
qualifications for that matter (Except for an archaic telecoms deploma)
and thought it was time to get some 'stuff' so I can be more marketable.
I'm in my second semester of the first year. We had to choose four out
of six subjects, unfortunately, the school dropped two this year..
they were .. Structured Programming and Visual Basic (phewww). So we
were given a complusary 4 subjects, they were....
A+, Networking, Web Page Design and E-Commerce.
Some people made a fuss about this and we were told that there were not
enough people in the class interested in programming, and that it was
not viable for the school to hire a lecturer.
No Problemo....
THEN THE PERSON EXPLAINING THIS, SAID THAT PROGRAMMERS AND NOT IN GREAT
DEMAND IN TRINIDAD, AND PROGRAMMERS ARE REALLY SYSTEM INTEGRATERS THAT
ARE NO LONGER NEEDED SINCE PEOPLESOFT AND S.A.P. ARE FULL SOLUTION
PACKAGES. FINALLY HE SAID THAT TRINIDADIANS WERE NOT PATIENT PEOPLE WHO
LIKE TO THINK THINGS THROUGH AND THUS, WE ARE NOT A NATION OF
PROGRAMMERS, AND MOST PROGRAMMERS END UP TEACHING 'CAUSE THEY CANNOT GET
A JOB....AND HE WENT AHEAD TO DISCOURAGE PROGRAMMING ALL TOGETHER.
cool down cool down.....breath in.... breath out...10,9,8....2,1
Folks, I did not like what was said cause it means I am either not a
true programmer or I am not a true Trinidadian.

Oh, come on. Don't you recognize someone who tried *and FAILED* to be
a programmer?
Programmers are a dime a dozen. Good programmers a dollar a pair.
Software Engineers and Developers will always be in demand.

I'm sure there are good reasons to attend college in Trinidad (my
local forecast says a low of 30F tonight), but I wonder if you are
getting a good value for your tuition dollar.

Bruce

Well I live in Trinidad and I am doing too much here to leave right now,
also the courses are based on an English system and not Trinidadian so
the degree will eventually be an English one.
Also the weather is always nice and the temperature is always between 17
celcius in the night and 35 celcius in the day. I live in the Tropics
and it has treated me well so far.
I will be attending the Borcon next year hopefully and I am planning on
leaving my job very soon to do development full time.
Finally I think I want to migrate one day probably to USA or Canada but
with the 9/11 stuff and the fact that my physical appearance is that of
an East Indian and probably a Pakistani I think I will be under a lot of
pressure with paranoid national security officiers (understood). But I
do not really have a problem with this per say 'cause I have nothing to
hide, just I will be an unfortunate victim of constant servalance.
