Hi people,

because there is no real technical relation, I post it here...

I read on one of the JEDI newsgroup a message about .NET v2 not fully
"supporting" the "Windows.Forms-idea". There was not much more in that
message.

As I am just starting using .NET and already have .NET v.2 beta on one
of my desktop PCs, I cannot see how Windows.Forms should be changed.

I also frequently read articles on MS blogs and MSDN. I haven't seen
anything on that topic either.

Can anybody point me to a report about the "future" of Windows.Forms in
..NET and what's not sure about it?

Thanx!

Without Windows Forms, C# would have no means of creating a GUI app in
..NET 2. Avalon won't be available until Longhorn is released, which is
well after .NET 2.

Hence, Windows Forms is here to stay for at least the next few years.

Thank you, Craig.

But what else is there? I looked up Avalon and just found a .NET
implementation Apache-implementation. What will replace Windows Forms
then?

Avalon in the MS codename for the GUI/presentation layer and Shell for
Longhorn, the next version of Windows and first to be based on .NET
technology. This will be build around a new XML dialect, XAML, and
will be the preferred way of writing GUIs (not just forms) on that
operating system.

WinForms, and Win32 for that matter, should still work, but XAML will
be the blessed, optimised way of working and where all new features
will show up.

As Craig says though, Longhorn is not due for a couple more years yet,
even without deadline slippage.

I guess they meant that when you install the 2.0 beta, your WinForms
designer might not work anymore in C#Builder (and probably in
SharpDevelop or even VS), and Delphi 8.

So to test 2.0, you're well advised to use a different computer, or a
virtual one (like VMWare).

No, Rudy, it works fine.

I have J# and C# Express 2005 beta from MS running perfectly next to D8.

Using the .NET 2.0 beta?

I was not talking about the products you mentioned.

They do? I couldn't find anything about that on the MS website.

well you better get in touch with MS's website team then.

Apart from just saying they do (and I have installed C# express), July
9th post here...

I looked for the required stuff, and indeed, it needs 2.0.

Good to hear it works fine along 1.2 and C#Builder. I've heard of
problems with the WinForms designer after the installation of 2.0.

Yes, Rudy. They use that version. Funny thing: If I run the same C# app
in Borland C# and MS C# 2005, the two compilers use different
frameworks :-)

Hi Rudy,

it would be very embarassing for MS if the change to 2.0 would cause
any problems. Richter keeps on talking for ages about assemblies and
versioning in his book and how good a job MS did with it... I also
think that the assembly versioning approach is a good endeavour...

2.0 includes features which give more flexibility to assembly
versioning.

AFAIK, .NET's (much famed) "side-by-side" execution should take care of
that. Personally, I use tons of 3rd party stuff, all made for v1.1, and
it runs (with one designer-related exception) under VS.NET 2005 beta
just fine.

Dejan
