Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had some good recommendations on beginners
D2005 web sites with walk-throughs. Ideally it would explain the
structure of Delphi code and the IDE features them selves.

You see, I have a friend who has rudimentary programming skills having
almost completed his University degree in computing. However they teach
mainly command line Java and he has /some/ experience in VS2003 (C#).

He often sees me happily tinkering away in my Delphi 2005 Pro, and we
talk regularly about it when I mention something really cool that it
does and/or how much I love it. At some stage I must have mentioned
that I was moving some previously C# .NET web services into Delphi,
which must have struck a chord as I am mostly in W32. He asked if it
was .NET as he thought it was native and I replied it is both. I enjoy
watching people's jaws drop at that Smile. I thought he was going to keel
over when I mentioned it does C#, and soon, C++.

Now his interest level must have gone through the roof as he couldn't
believe that he had not even heard of Delphi except through me, and yet
it was a system capable of all that! (a sad reflection). So to help
enlighten him I have shown him what it looks like etc. He liked what he
saw and wanted to have a play in it so I give him my copy of the APC
magazine which has D2005 personal on its cover disc.

However, I know that there is (also very regrettably) absolutely nothing
in the magazine itself about Delphi. I kind of expected a basic walk
through or something. From APC's point of view it would have been a
good way to entice follow-on sales, but thats another story.

So now I want to point him in the right direction to get started. Where
to put variable declarations and things of that nature which are
different to C# and Java. Also how the IDE works/layout etc.

Does anyone out there know of a really good D2005 (D2005 specifically as
the IDE layout is different for starters) starters web site? I would
like a good (free) place to point him to help wet his appetite for Delphi.

Thanks in advance. Robin.

I'd recommend books.

When it's released:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0782143423/qid=1119830358/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-0430363-1226564

In the meanwhile for Delphi for Win32:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/078214201X/ref=pd_sim_b_1/102-0430363-1226564?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance

for Delphi.net:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0672324431/ref=pd_sim_b_1/102-0430363-1226564?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance

I think he'd be better off with the D2005 Architect trial version you could
download from the Borland website. The eprsonal version is extremely
limited.

I don't know of one. I suggest fire it up, use the help file, ask questions
on these ng's and get Marco's D2005 book when its published.

While not D2005 specific, I would certainly recommend
http://www.delphibasics.co.uk/ .

Also let him know about the friendly Delphi community, and point his
newsreader to newsgroups.borland.com. It may be a good idea to steer
him away from this particular ng for a little while though. :-)

I've seen many cases. Myself with only a couple of months (lol, really) in
the university doing the IT career have done most of a friend of mine's
final work to get his degree. He does the analysis part though. I do the
programming, he knows a bit only (no pun intended Smile)

I know you wrote 2005, but I think it might be worth looking at Marco Cantu
free guides on www.marcocantu.com as well, regardless of them being based on
an older version

Yes, I learned MANY things about Delphi and OOP from his books.
I think he is a good writer.

A good advice. I have always found Marco's presentation style to be
especially suited for those "new to Delphi".

Totally agree, Zarko is doing an awesome job on this site!!! It can be a
really useful tool for a beginner (and not only), especially he's the type
to learn by making small projects :-)

I'm astonished !!!
How is it that I didn't never come across this ?!
This is exactly what most new users need before buying more advance books.

Actually, I was going to recommend this, but the OP said he was looking
specifically for IDE stuff.

Generic newbies (which I am well qualified<g>) should start with a couple of
things (new to Delphi, not new to programming):

Cantu's "Mastering Delphi 7" - go cover to cover.
Delphi Basics site, as suggested here. The site itself is great, but
download the local copy (a small fee but well worth it).

I use the Delphi Basics more *after* I read Cantu. That's the stuff you
need while actually writing code (Cantu is for base understanding and
strategy). Unfortunately, you also end up using Delphi Basics for what
should be more easily found with Delphi Help as well.

Second suggestion for a newbie: Use two monitors on your machine. If you
have a laptop, this is probably very easy to set up. Program on one (Delphi
IDE takes up the entire screen to do anything useful), use the other for
"Help" (Help, Delphi Basics, Google).
