Currently, I'm a D6 user. I did not upgrade to D7, but I'm planning to upgrade to D8. I haven't written Delphi MDI applications for several years, but I have a MDI application that I would like to improve. I want to do this with D8 and explore the possiblity of porting the application to dotNet.
Will this be possible (i.e., painless) with D8?

SDI is consider now the standar layout, so is abandon more in broad
terms. I always build MDI program and i don't found nothing in D7 that
stop me to do a MDI program

After revisiting my old MDI application, I was surprised at
how much time had past since it's last version. It was
developed with D3.
Considering the negative vibes I'm getting about Delphi's
current and future support of MDI applications. It looks like I'll be converting it to SDI.
Sigh...

IIRC, it is strongly discouraged, although ISTR that some new MS products
use MDI. I could be wrong, though.

What specifically doesn't work with regards to MDI in D7?
Also, I could be wrong, but isn't MDI dropped by MS? Like years ago?

MDI is a GUI technique that in the beginning looked very promising but
turned out not to be as versatile as once believed.
That doesn't mean it can't serve some purposes, and in fact do it well
in certain applications, it just has to be done right.
The assumption that D7 doesn't support MDI has to be wrong, of course.

MDI + TActionMainMenuBar

If I have to totally re-program a already done application, to give my
customers what they want (new look & feel) that's a problem.
(And thats one point why we (the company I work at) only bought one D7
license (mine) and all other people are still working on D5 waiting for
a better D7 or D8)
And MS is still compatible with MDI! (It's not marked as obsolete in
MSDN July'03) AND it's also available in C#.
