"Symantec has asked a U.S. court to order a halt to the development of Windows Vista,
claiming that its rival is wrongfully incorporating Veritas storage technology into
its next-generation OS.

Symantec sued Microsoft yesterday, seeking unspecified damages and also asking the
court to remove Symantec's storage technology from a variety of Microsoft products,
including Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and the upcoming Vista and "Longhorn"
Windows Server products.

"We're asking them to remove the technology, because it belongs to us," a Symantec
spokesman said.

The dispute centers around an August 1996 agreement between the two companies that
granted Microsoft the right to use Veritas Software's volume management technology in
its Windows NT product. Symantec purchased Veritas in a $10.2 billion acquisition
that closed last year."

But does he get paid for not working on a car ? In other words, if you keep
your GM, then he gets paid more :-)

Symantec should realized that MS keeps them in business. If it weren't for
Windows, no-one would have an AV program, and AFAIK, the most popular is
NAV.

Not really accurate. Windows is the primary target for virus writers

the target of choice, we'd still have viruses, and we'd still need AV
software.

I guess so, I thought about writing it more accurately, but only after
sending the post :-)

However, given today's current computer scene, it does seem rather puzzling
to sue your biggest source of customers.

That makes no sense. He'll keep customers by telling them the truth.
They may come in less frequently, but there will be more of them because
they are happier.

I believe it's not the first time that "...Microsoft misappropriated its technology
and even tricked the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office into granting Microsoft patents
based on _one's_ intellectual property..."

Hmm, given the Mac market, something tells me that this example is beginning
to be a little stretched <g>

Forgot that Symantec bought Veritas. A year before, they purchased
PowerQuest at something like $160million. PowerQuest and Veritas were direct
competitors, seems to me that there's an IT monopoly brewing, and it's not
Microsoft...
