What do people here do with their old Delphi software when they get a "New
User" license for a new Delphi product? Where do people sell their old
software? Some version of Delphi cost 2 times as much as the price I got for
my 1992 Camry last month. Which means I can't afford it, and I'm looking for
a beat up old Delphi license that will come for about the sale price of my
Camry or less.
After writing that paragraph I went to ebay and did some shopping. People
are still trying to sell copies of Delphi v2!!! and v3!! and v4! I already
have v5, and I'm not sure it cost me much more than some people are asking
for used copies of v3! Maybe they honsetly expect the item to be treated as
an "antique" and therefore worth more than the original list prices.
Whatever happened to the good old days when Turbo Pascal was on sale for
$49? Or was it $29? And now the son of Turbo Pascal costs 100 times that
price. /rant

I usually "upgrade" instead of getting a new license every time because it's
SOOO much cheaper. And when you upgrade, you cannot legally sell the
version you upgraded from.

The first versions of TP were simple, for DOS only, compiled to .COM apps
only, and not really geared for the enterprise market. Delphi has many
tools and libraries bundled in, an incredibly more complex OS to work with,
and is marketed a lot more towards large businesses who don't even look at
simple "hobbiest" tools. I guess you could look at it like wages: my
grandfather was probably happy to make $5 a week at one point, but now we
consider 100 times that to be low wages (for a programmer in the U.S.).

Well, officially speaking if you cannot sell an 'upgrade' because it is not
legally a full product. If you want to do so, you will need to sell your
entire
collection at one go and forgo your license or if the subsequent versions
were purchased at full price.
Technically speaking, I would keep about 1 or 2 prior versions of Delphi
with me because there are projects which I worked with which are compiled
in those versions and sometimes the transition to a new version of Delphi
may
not be all that possible or too time consuming to handle as I do heavily
rely
on 3rd party components of which some has already folded and are no where
to be found. Some source codes takes too long to convert of one or two basic
functionability.
In my case, my work for the year would be greatly covered the cost I invest
in the new Delphi many times over and I just write off the prior versions as
a business expense so to speak.

Oh it also depends what you need to do with delphi, however, if you
only use it for home use you can actually get hold of some versions
free, soem of the personal editions were downloadable and you could
apply for free for a key.
So, depends what you need.

LOL - I guess you still work for the same wage you got back then as
well.

dunno about you, but my income hasn't increased at anywhere near
the rate of the price of borland's pascal compilers. I paid in
the neighborhood of $50 for my first copy of TP3. but to buy a
new user licence today would cost somewhere between $1000 (delphi
2005 pro) and $3000 (delphi architect). so between 1986 and 2004,
the price of borlands top shelf pascal product has increased by
a factor of ~60. assuming you've been working that long (and a
1986 start date probably excludes 99.9% of the folks under 30),
has your annual income also increased by a factor of 60?

verb tense is important here...IIRC, the french version was available
for a short while at http://www.inprise.fr/download/compilateurs/...
but that page no longer exists, and it appears that the download is no
longer being offered...c'est la vie, eh? :^)

Id go with that, I worked for a company for 7.5 years and didnt have a
payrise for 6 years of that despite them issuing company wide
statements such as they had done reviews and found they were generally
under paying people by as much as 30%. Problem was for me no one else
in the company did a similar job, so they could cheat me out of all
sorts really

If D2005 only did what TP3 was capable of, it would most definitely be
overpriced, but that is hardly the case.

I never learned how to use half of what D7 or D2005 allowed
me to do; but I used practically all of what TP3 provided.
