I'm using the new (still Beta) MS WindowsOneCare AV and firewall program. I have
an app that accesses the internet to upload and download stuff. When I run the
program in the IDE, OneCare pops a dialog asking if I want to allow it access to
the net. I click Allow, and it acts correctly, and does so for as long as I
don't stop and restart my app. Then is prompts me again.

Each time I click Allow, it adds an instance of my app to OneCare's Allow list,
and won't let me delete them.

The app run outside the IDE doesn't trip OneCare.

MS response was to turn off the firewall when running the app in the IDE. The
issue is supposed to go to the developers, but with retail release about a month
away, I doubt if it's gonna get addressed by then.

Just a heads up......

For me it sounds that it works as expected. Each and every time you
build/compile/start your application in the IDE it differs from the other
builds (at least the file date/time).

Zone Alarm does the same thing, but it has a "Changes Frequently" flag you can
set for the exe so it stops asking.

Good point if that's what triggers it. Sure is annoying, tho.

That would be a nice feature to have!

OneCare:

Select 'View or change settings' and then select the Firewall tab in the
popup dialog. This page has the obligatory 'Advanced settings...' button and
here you can see an M$ style (keyhole) list containing a few hundred
instances of your application. Select them one-by-one and click remove :-(

Unfortunately, mine doesn't work that way. I do that, and close the list, then

reopen it and they're back. The support engineer suggested I do the delete,
reboot the box and look again. No joy there either.

After a lot of experimenting, I find I can delete all instances, close the
dialog and reopen it. One instance less. Repeat until all are gone.... ;-(
Arrrggh!!!

I had the same effect.

Only after restoring to the default settings they were gone.
If you open your application again than only one instance is displayed.

I'll give it a try. An MS rep did call with a satisfaction survey. The upshot is
a 'technical manager' is to call me. Seems like they're trying.....

You can enable a specific outgoing /port/ in OneCare, and it will never
prompt again. (of course, as a downside, it will allow any app to use
that port).

You know, for a bunch of software developers (MS), they sure don't seem to
understand what developers might need. ;/
