There are questions flying around regarding Strategy and how do can provide
my signature for the Open Community Letter.
In an effort to answer all those questions I've posted a new article on my
blog. You can find the article here ...
http://www.simventions.com/gustavson/2004/10/strategy-for-open-community-letter.html
After you look over that, please come back here (this thread) to share your
comments / feedbacks (and more questions?) That way together we can all
answer and make the proper determination of what we as a community should
do.
Thanks.

Hi Paul,
You could also consider either a section of the letter, or a separate letter
that represents Delphi/BCB 3rd party component/library vendors. After all,
the success of Delphi is in many ways directly related to the availability
of quality 3rd party components, so you would like to think that Borland
would listen to what they have to say.
Delphi/BCB integration would obviously be in 3rd party vendors interests
too. Either from the point of generating new income or easing the current
dual maintenance burden.
Keep up the excellent work.

I second that, as the coordinator of the JVCL.
Even if we don't get any revenue out of it in terms of euros (well, I'm
not American <g>), I want to believe that the success of Delphi and BCB
is also because of the strong community of developers providing examples
and components for Free. You don't see that in the VC++ world...
Cheers

Okay this might seem a bit radical, but do we want to consider sending the
letter to any of Borland's major shareholders as well?
I'm not specifically advocating this myself, but I think it probably ought
to be discussed - Borland's management are after all directly accountable to
the shareholders.

All I have to say is that I whoeheartedly agree with the whole strategy
outlined there, and I would like to thank you for all the effort, I
believe I am speaking on behalf of a lot people here.
You definitely are TeamB material IMHO, but I don't know if TPTB will
see this. :)

Good point, and one I've made before. Your post got me to thinking about
the number of 3rd party vendor newsgroups I follow, so I posted messages
on this subject to them. It might be a good idea for others to follow
suite (or reply to my postings to keep them fresh and add points I
missed).
I posted the message below to:
AutomatedQA (AQtime), ASP, Delphi-Gems, DevExpress, Graphics32,
InnoSetup, LMDTools, madCollection, NexusDB,
comp.lang.pascal.delphi.misc, TeeChart, TurboPower and WPTools.
----------------------------
As you may have heard, Borland is seriously considering continuing
development of Borland C++ Builder (BCB). This is a (potential) reversal
of their decision of last fall to kill the product.
At the recent BorCon there was a C++ Meet The Team meeting at which
BorCon attendees met with the BCB/C++ management team. At this meeting
it was stated that both the BCB and Delphi teams supported continuing
BCB. Borland announced that they would make a final decision regarding
BCB's future by the 15th of December.
At the Meet The Team event, BCB was demoed running in the Diamondback
IDE (the upcoming Delphi/BDS release). It appears that if BCB is
revived, it would be within the BDS IDE - IMHO a good thing for
everyone. This would bring BCB out of the shadows and place it
side-by-side with Delphi. I believe that it would also make it easier
for 3rd party component vendors to support both Delphi and BCB.
Prior to BorCon, Paul Gustavson had proposed writing an Open Letter to
Borland in support of continuing BCB. He brought this up at the Meet The
Team meeting, and was encouraged to do so. That effort is now underway.
Paul has an draft of the Open Letter on-line at the link below. To
gather data in support of the letter and as evidence of BCB's
importance, Mark Jacobs of DK Computing has designed and hosted a
questionnaire. This effort is being discussed on
borland.public.cppbuilder.non-technical.
I ask anyone who has an interest in seeing BCB kept alive to participate
in this effort. This applies to developers, 3rd party component vendors
and companies who depend upon applications developed in BCB. It isn't
too late for BCB - please join us in the effort to keep it alive!

Good job, Paul. Much appreciated!
Your 'get out the vote' campaign sounds like a good idea, but where
would we get a list of folks to contact? Given the phone numbers I'd be
happy to make some calls.
