|
|
After fight (and lost) in the machine in my house against several spyware &
trojans (i use 2-3 diferent anti-spyware software), i decide to reinstall,
simply the system get patetic and included the work with Delphi go to
frustration (for some wird reason randomly the Open File dialog popup in the
middle of anything...).
So, before plug the internet and install with a clean ghost copy, install
firewall & antivirus. Now i plug the internet and in FRENETIC way i start to
update all my programs... the firewall & antivirus take small time but patch
my system take too much (and i now have ADSL!)... maybe a couple of hours.
However, i only have a new machine working for some days and now i get some
nasty spywares (I *think* that i install now only software with not adware)
so i think that the fault was the time where i don't get the full patch of
my system.. while i get thew Windows Update. So, is possible get a offline
copy of Windows Update? In my work the situation is worst: We have a web
server (the idea is for 24x7 operation) and get a LOT of virus&trojans
attacks (is Windows 2003 server, have ISA Server and was configured by a
expert...i think)... and then you count the whole company and the thing of
reinstall&patch become serious (no, i don't can go to linux..by now)
Thanks for any suggestion... I'm not a expert on security, and by now i get
more serious in limit the range of visited websites and research more before
download and try something, but is obvious that the combo
anti-spyware/firewall/antivirus is still not enough...

Hi,
I use a combination of Tiny Firewall, SpyBot 1.3 beta (with Free
Version of Ad-Aware) and F-Secure Antivirus.
I use the Free Version of Tiny Personal firewall (2.0 which is no
longer available as free download now from Tinysoftware but you can
download a copy from http://www.webmasterfree.com/tpfw.html ) This
program uses rule based dection method, so no program can connect to
the internet without your consent.
For Defending against spyware, I use a combination of Spybot SD (
http://security.kolla.de ) and Ad-Aware. Spybot includes a realtime
program (teatime) for detecting the changes made by the IE-ActiveX
installation and Auto run Registry modification. So when ever a IE
ActiveX application tries to get installed, it will ask for your
consent.
I use IE only for sites that are not displayed properly (like window
update and some IE only sites) with Mozilla Firefox. Using Non-IE
browser would really help in eliminating quite a lot of problem.
For the past 2 years I'm not having any problem with my machine and I'm
running a fairly clean XP OS.
MS patches are available for offline download (search MSDN with KB
number), but you really have to hunt through the list, which will be
completely insane. If you are using IE only for non-standard sites and
windows Updates, you wont have much problem with spywares.

You can get a free update CD from Microsoft. This will always be out of date
but it may help.
