|
|
I'm rebuilding my own personal development environment, since funds are very
very very limited I'm looking for a very inexpensive (free or open source)
if available RCS/CVS system, doesn't matter if it ties into the IDE or even
has a nice front end to it (although that would be nice... Any
suggestions?
Thanks... |

Agreed. I use both CVS and SVN.

I would definitely second TortoiseSVN. I have been using it for a few years
now and it works like a gem.

I believe that there is an option to lock a file when checking it out. I
could be wrong about that -- no, SVN 1.2 introduces locking!
|
Yes it did.
Unfortunately, they use the same term, so it sounds at first like the
same thing. But the spelling is about all they have in common.
In SVN, you check out the whole directory at once. You certainly
don't lock all the files. Then you deal with conflicts after the fact.
With locking ala VCS, you deal with conflicts pre-emptively.
There is no way to have a conflict when you check it in.

It was designed by ning-nongs :-)

Brad, maybe we'd better not ask. The last time Jim explained one of his
colloquial expressions, it created quite a stir.

I hesitated. but in the end, my curiosity got the best of me.
I'm sure he does it on purpose. But you are right, it is
probably best not to encourage him.
I'll try harder next time.

Actually, I'd like to have a nice SCC API Plugin within the Delphi(7)
IDE. That way I could use PushOk to access SVN (or any other, SCC
compatible, VCS).
I got used to it in VS and now, every time I use Delphi, it's just
annoying to do version control in explorer... :-/
|
Use total commander for file management - Explorer is a a really poor way
to manage files IMO - because total commander can be driven by the keyboard
and the mouse at the same time with well thought out keyboardshortcuts
already pre set up for you - such as CTRL-\ to go back directory, or
backspace if your prefer - CTRL-ARROW and ALT-ARROW are also useful
keyboard shortcuts which match file panels or go back in your history.
But with SVN there are a few things you still have to pull open Explorer
for because total commander doesn't handle the right click moving menu items
(move files to SVN repository here, etc.). Install a button in total
commander to open current file panel in explorer, and
install a button in Delphi tools menu to "explore current project directory in
total commander". Click tools menu in delphi, launch the custom tool you made
which launches total commander, and you are at your directory that you need to
work with.
Only thing about tortoise I don't like is it is yet another shell extensoin
which slows the whole operating system down - every time I right click with my
mouse my CPU pegs up to 500% for 10 minutes because of all the nasty
TortoiseSVN/TortoiseCVS/SendTo menu items that need to load. |

Here in Australia, a drongo is a fool, dope, idiot, dim-witted. You use the
term to show your contempt for that person.
As a TortoiseSVN lover, I guess Jim does not think much of me.

Often times it's an affectionate slur. Parents (Especially in my era)
in Oz will often call their kids a ning nong when they do something
stupid.

Heh, I worked on a Project with Jim a year or 2 back and have known him
longer than that, and I can tell you, IMO he is being less colloquial
in these groups than he is in the flesh :-)

Dictionary.com tells me drongos are:
\Dron"go\, n.; pl. Drongos. (Zo["o]l.) A passerine bird of the family
Dicrurid[ae]. They are usually black with a deeply forked tail. They are
natives of Asia, Africa, and Australia; -- called also drongo shrikes.
Is there something more to this than what the dictionary's telling me?

He specifically singled out the designers, and didn't actually mention
what he thought of the users. So you may be safe on this one :-)
