We're using Delphi 5 Pro against SQL Server 7 and 2000, with no problems; I
haven't seen much in the higher versions/levels that make me want to upgrade
just for SQL Server stuff. For middleware we've used ADO, BDE, and
ODBCexpress, again with few issues (well, except for the BDE, which we're
busily dumping from those few of our apps which still use it). Of the ones
I've tried, the BDE sucked, I liked ODBCexpress the most, but ADOexpress
seems fine.

You probably have seen the DTS tool in SQL Server, and of course you can
control those packages from Delphi via the dtspkg.dll COM interface.

advice on converting our Delphi Apps.

We use the DOA components that use the low level Net-8 calls to access
Oracle. Which data access components are recommended to communicate with
SQL Server? ADO, dbExpress, native ODBC, other?

Is there a preferred version or Level of Delphi we should have? We've
gotten by using D5 Pro for years since the DOA components gave us all the
control of Oracle we needed.

All advice will be greatly appreciated.

If you are considering updating Delphi then upgrade to the latest version
(7). I would then recommend either ADO or dbExpress (dbExpress now has MSSQL
drivers). If you do not upgrade then use ADO. You should definitely avoid
the BDE since it does not fully support MSSQL beyond 6.5 and has since been
deprecated.
