Basically, there ae standard news servers that support the original RFC 977, and more modern news servers that support some or all of the extensions suggested in the USEFOR draft specs. So you know what you're dealing with, the USEFOR drafts include the LIST EXTENSIONS command whch lists the supported extensions.
