I have less clutter around the place. I hate the idea of having to have a
CRT hanging around taking up a huge amount of space if I could just hook
up
a laptop to do its job instead.

Most laptops come with a TV out and a VGA-out port. This is to display
what's on the laptop's TFT screen to say a TV or a monitor. I have not seen
a laptop that comes with a Video-in port, and I imagine that they would cost
a fortune if they did exist.
But you might want to look into a KVM switch. This allows 2 or more
computers to share 1 keyboard, mouse and monitor. Just flick a switch to
choose which machine you're working on.
