When I try to rename fields (other than private fields) the refactoring
fails to do anything, although JBuilder can find references with no problem.
JBuolder appears able to do this renaming on the sample projects, so is
there any project setting which might be critical? (I have already asked it
to rebuild before refactoring).

Look at Project | Project Properties | Build | Java and
check your settings. For best results you should be using
"Borland Make".
