I love corporate America. Might be it is a time to became one... ;o)
Oh, well... It is a busy morning and will be a busy market (I guess)

Quarterly reports
========================
10-Q -
http://secfilings.nasdaq.com/filingFrameset.asp?FileName=0001193125%2D06%2D096897%2Etxt&FilePath=%5C2006%5C05%5C02%5C&CoName=BORLAND+SOFTWARE+CORP&FormType=10%2DQ%2FA&RcvdDate=5%2F2%2F2006&pdf=

10-K -
http://secfilings.nasdaq.com/filingFrameset.asp?FileName=0001193125%2D06%2D096887%2Etxt&FilePath=%5C2006%5C05%5C02%5C&CoName=BORLAND+SOFTWARE+CORP&FormType=10%2DK&RcvdDate=5%2F2%2F2006&pdf=

8-K - http://biz.yahoo.com/e/060503/borl8-k.html

Revenue from the IDE
====================
From the annual report - "Revenue from the IDE products were approximately
$84 million, or approximately 30%, of total revenue in the year ended
December 31, 2005, a decline of approximately $49 million from 2004."

SD> So, DevCo has a budget of at least 84$M and this is in mind that
resources what John K and Co had to market IDEs was very limited.

"Borland to Cut 300 Jobs"
==========================================

http://yahoo.reuters.com/stocks/QuoteCompanyNewsArticle.aspx?storyID=urn:newsml:reuters.com:20060503:MTFH61178_2006-05-03_13-18-50_WEN6643&symbol=BORL.O&rpc=44

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) -- Borland Software Corp., a maker of software that's
used to develop business applications, said on Wednesday it will cut 300
jobs, or about 20 percent of its full-time staff, as part of a
reorganization plan.
Borland said the job cuts along with the divestiture of its developer tools
group, announced on Feb. 8, should save the company $60 million on an annual
basis.
"Borland is continuing to execute on the plan we outlined in February,"
chief executive Tod Nielsen said in a prepared statement. "We believe these
changes will not only streamline operations, but will also better align our
resources for success in the enterprise."
Borland said its developer tools group has attracted "a strong number of
qualified bidders," and the company hopes to identify a buyer "within the
next several months."
Shares of Borland were unchanged in premarket trading from Tuesday's closing
price of $5 on the Nasdaq.

SD> we have planed movements already over the course of next months. Either
we close to the sell-off or to the deadline for people to find a new place.

Borland Unveils New Organizational Structure
======================================
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/060503/20060503005304.html?.v=1

"Borland's internally formed Developer Tools Group. This group now consists
of approximately 180 Borland employees, with sales, marketing and product
teams working independently within the Company."

SD> so we have very compact group right now. Which hopefully will find a new
home very soon.

Fun time - everybody love golf
=============================================
From the 10k

"...Mr. Nielsen has access to a golf club membership paid for by us. During
their tenures with us, Messrs. Fuller and Arnold had access to such golf
club membership. The value of the membership is $415,100, which includes
$400,000 for the initial purchase of the membership, $12,600 in annual fees
and a $2,500 membership transfer fee. These amounts are not reflected in the
table above, as it would be difficult for us to pro-rate the respective
values to each of the respective Named Executive Officers."

SD> I know that a lot of business decisions those days are made while
golfing (oh great, old England), but I think somewhere should be a fine line
of spending. Is there any "statistic" about how much money Golf
participation could bring?

It has to be worth at least 20mil in revenue. That's the number thrown
about when asked about some new feature or product.

That's very inaccurate. DevCo is > IDE products. DevCo's budget also
covers *much* more than marketing, and John's job isn't marketing. So
while the $84M figure is interesting, it doesn't mean what you imply
here.

For the record, I think DevCo should have access to more resources,
BDN deserves more funding, and golf is distilled evil. But I can't base
these personal biases of mine on the number above.

What I am implying here, as you see it?
I know but revenue is part of the budget and participate in one. it is not
the budget of DevRel though. Read it, do not mix it and do not twist it.
84M is the revenue part of the budget. John, Anders, David I and others
spend huge amount of time to promote IDE related part of the products and
this is what is important when we are looking at future DevCo (not ALM).
Even though marketing is not John's job, it is DevRel which doing it
primerely right now for IDE products (from Borland side), don't you think?

number is just the number and when they are official, you cannot fight them.
Would be nice to see what percent actually went to support IDE products...

So to keep track of your golf scores you need:
- a PDA capable of running the CF
- either a Wifi module in the PDA, an always-on GPRS connection,
or preferably satellite connectivity (or you may lose the connection
in bunker #3)
- a 24x7 server with fiberoptics interconnected Wifi access points
scattered around the course, and always-on GPRS and satellite
connectivity
- a backup PDA, in case the first one gets dropped/smashed/misplaced
or just plain runs out of battery juice
- a high-resolution laser color printer to print the scores
- a boy with a notepad and a pencil, because you never know when all
that technology will go dead on you

And you haven't even started taking care of the short grass with all
that, no wonder the annual fee is so high ^_^

Are you talking about how many people will go with DevCo?

"Borland's internally formed Developer Tools Group. This group now consists
of approximately 180 Borland employees, with sales, marketing and product
teams working independently within the Company."

and

"Borland will reduce its workforce by approximately 300 employees, or about
20 percent of its regular full-time staff. The majority of staff reductions
will come from the re-scoping of Borland's international operations. Upon
completion of the workforce reduction, geographic consolidation, and planned
divestiture of its Developer Tools Group (announced February Cool, Borland
anticipates annualized cost savings of approximately $60 million." -

That whole thing reminds me of the luminary that was running Quest Software
when I was there. He spent $47 million of the company's money on two jets
for executives to use, then the quarterly figures came in they showed a loss
of around $47 million dollars (interestingly enough). So he downsized the
company, laying off people to offset the difference. Not unlike the married
hedge fund owner that cheats on his wife with a cheap 20-something-year-old
slut from Romania.. Or the other owner of a hedge fund that tells employees
they will not lose their jobs and the cost of the move will be paid for by
the company when he announces to them that the company is moving to Seattle
from Chicago, only to layoff a good proportion of the staff, and tell many
others that they will get no compensation at all, just *days* before the
move.

is one of the most ridiculous books ever written.)

So, more importantly to most of us, how many of those 180 positions are
being cut? Hopefully not 20%?

As devco hasnt been named, a lot of the moves probably havent happened
until the whole thing is official. However, Borland can announce that
various quantities wont be with them any longer.

Perhaps spinning off 180 employese is considered cutting them?
