The server today, Saturday, October 4, is really slow. I am getting very few
of the Sven viruses sent to me compared to a number of days ago, as the rate
seems to have slacked off tremendously, so I am wondering why the Borland
server seems slower than it has been since it went down for repair.

Just because you aren't receiving virus emails as much does not mean that
the virus has lesseneed its attack on servers. Keep in mind that the virus
attacks email, newsgroups, and IRC channels.

I wish I could say that the attacks on my email have lessened, but they have
not, I'm still being flooded with dozens of messages every single day,
rendering my account almost unusable.

OK, I did not realize that this virus is still as virulent as before for a
number of accounts.

I am glad mine has slacked off finally but I am still being sent some
occasionally.

FYI:
I wanted to construct a test, so I opened a new Yahoo account. I used the
email address from that account in 6 replies, all posted on Sept 27th
between 3:20 PM and 5:37 PM Eastern time. The email address has been used
for nothing else. After those replies I then changed my email address in
messages to its current, invalid address of dont_email_me (AT) bitbuck (DOT) et (I
found out tonight that .et is for Ethiopia, so will be moving the period and
change it to dont_email_me (AT) bitbuc (DOT) ket tonight so that there is no
possiblity of a server at the address given).

The SWEN virus emails into that one email address started the next day. It
was greatest on the 28th, and a bit less on the 29th but from the 30th on
has been at an about 6 Meg per day level since. I have not seen any signs
of it tapering off to below that level and in fact deleted another 2+ Meg of
virus emails immediately prior to visiting here.

Note that since all information about that Yahoo account is at the Yahoo
site and not on my machine, even were I infected with the SWEN virus, no
activity from it would have knowledge of that account's email.

If my 6 messages can generate that level of activity, consider what the
bandwidth usage and connection frequency must be from the sum total of
infected machines all visiting newsgroups (not just Borland's) to log emails
found in messages.

Thankfully, we have anti-virus software to help. Imagine what the Internet
would be today without it!

By the way...anyone who writes/creates a virus should be severly punished.
Now, I'm not suggesting that they be intentionally infected with a deadly
(but non-transmittable) virus, and permitted nothing less than a slow and
agonizing death -- that would be over the top -- but just barely.

Hi All,
I can confirm Ed's findings.
Putting a non-existent email address into these postings,
or mangling the real email address by embedding
something like myREMOVETHISname@yaANDTHIShoo,
will foil the worm.

I received 600 weekend before,
only 6 this last weekend.....
I expect to receive none when my premangled postings roll off the end...

Having fun
Stephan

I have developed an advanced anti-virus application to prevent the SWEN

Oh this is boring. How come you guys get all the fun?

I don't get any viruses although those that send me adverts for Vicodin seem
to think I have something that needs curing. I suspect a plot - they send
out adverts for Russian brides and then when they're sure everybody's got
the clap, they try to sell the cure ;-)

I opened a Yahoo mailbox solely to test for receiving SWEN. It was very
successful.

If you like I can forward you several meg per day of the SWEN virus.
