Nick
I read this already since I receive my daily Dilbert per mail. I really
like those strips but my lack of English knowledge sometimes deprives me
of the punchline.
I certainly get the clou of this one but would highly appreciate it if
someone could explain what "sb. who knows his mass from a black hole"
means. Does it point in the direction: "no one could do that" or is it a
phrase in the manner "the more gravity the better you experience you mass"?
Any native speakers around?
Cheers,
Heiko Behrens

It means someone with some common sense; and it's very similar
sounding to the common expression 'knows his ass from a hole [in the
ground].'

If you remove the first letter from mass, it will spell a body cavity |
that a clueless person might not be able to distinguish from a 'hole in
the ground'. At least there is a common expression here in the US that
goes like that.
This sounds like the same expression, but made more geekish with the
physics references.

Loosely translated it means "He doesn't know what he's talking about".
It's actually a play on words. He can't, because of propriety, write
"He doesn't know his ass from a whole in the ground", so he make a
little play on words.

I'd say it means someone who DOES know what he is talking about.
Someone who DOESN'T know his mass from a black hole does not know what
he is talking about.

I suppose I qualify. I'm not sure why Nick started this thread here
rather than in off-topic, but here goes:
When someone is clueless, it's common to describe them colloquially as
someone who "doesn't know their @$$ from a hole in the ground." This
is obviously a pun on that.

Maybe because the cartoon speaks to many Delphi developers. I can relate...
PHB:"With .Net 2.0 coming out this year, we need to start converting our
applications to ASP.Net and use Visual Studio"
Me:"That would be a huge project. What do you supposed we use C#? VB?"
PHB:"Uh..no, I said Visual Studio"
