|

I'm asking this of someone who uses dbExpress heavily.
We have a huge BDE application that needs updating, either to ADO or
dbExpress. To the extent I've tried to use dbExpress with Delphi 7, it's
been pretty flakey, and I got the impression of weak support. There were
the MSSQL driver problems, the TSimpleDataset losing settings at design
time, and generally things not working right. On the other hand ADO,
while a little slower, seemed to have a mature and solid implementation.
So has dbExpress matured for Delphi 8?

Yes you're right for the weak support. I personally use MySQL and don't have
any specific problems that I (or google.com at least) can't solve in couple
of hours at most
- except one: I'm still waiting for driver for mysql v4.x to come out of
beta and not to mention v 5.x drivers...
In spite of the fact(s) dbExpress is working reasonably well for me
some say ...it doesn't matter what you have but how you use it!
perhaps you should try other DBs - try IB/FireBird its open source: MSSQL
(drivers) are known around here for being exceptionally unstable and buggy
for years. Things are changing but very sloooowly...
And... just forget about TSimpleDataSet use
TSQLDataSet+TDataSetProvider+TClienDataSet instead
HTH
P.S. It seems to me (this time) Borland are still wandering which road to
take to the future of DB. They don't develop their own - just support few
exisiting ones hoping most of the job to be done by vendors...
- going to extinction, Win32 too - I hope I am not right and there will be
Delphi 8 for win32 as separate release not as SP for D7 but... the time will
show

Core Labs makes an excellent dbExpress driver for MSSQL.
I have been using it in a production database for the past year,
and it works great.

I know the InterBase driver was updated for D8 (it now supports
BOOLEAN columns, for example). I presume some of the other drivers
have been updated as well, but I don't know the details.
