|
|
Hi folks,
There are some rumors that there will not be C++ Builder 7 as we know
the product, but instead we will have some Java based IDE with basic
cross platform compiler, and no VCL or CLX support. As a C++ Builder
developer, I should admit I feel a bit troubled, with the future of my
code and the future of the companies I work with (All of them use C++
Builder and VCL).
How much of it is true? If this is true, what exactly the Borland
folks are thinking? If they drop the VCL support, which was the only
reason all the people I know ware using C++ Builder over VC++, do they
think anybody will buy any other product from them? How we can tell any
company to standardize on a product that no mater how good it is ( and I
think C++ Builder is great ), when the company developing the product
tosses it out? What is going to happen with the trust in Borland?
Any input?
With best regards,

OK, let's calmly (HA!) discuss what we know (or think we know) from:
a. the open letter
b. tomahawk - the beta (or gamma) of the next BCB release.
A new framework is being developed. It's not in tomahawk and
won't be ready for the next release - but a public beta preview
will be in the next release.
A new 100% ANSI/ISO C++ and C99 compliant compiler is on its way - a public
beta preview of this will also be in the next BCB.
Tomahawk supports Windows XP, Windows 2000, RedHat Enterprise Linux 2.1
Solaris 8 (Sparc), any Symbian platform SDK, and Nokia Series 60 and 80
SDKs.
Tomahawk supports a bunch of C++ compilers, including MS and gcc.
There has to be VCL and CLX support - otherwise BCB is useless.
Sounds good to me. I just hope the frameworks is open sourced to some
extent.
