|
|
I downloaded the trial and installed it to a clean VMware Win XP SP2 PC.
It doesn't seem to see the trial license file I placed in my user
directory and asks for a username and password. I have NTFS security for
the license file set to myself and SYSTEM with full control. Not sure
what is going on here. Perhaps it doesn't like VMware but I haven't had
this problem with other software.
I started BDS2006 first without the trial license having forgot about it
and then copied it in and tried again. Was that a mistake?
Anyone having trouble getting the trial to work?

Minor correction: asks for serial number and authorization key. |

Have you copied the file to the correct location?
In my case, the location is C:\Documents and Settings\marko
Did you put the file in My Documents instead?

When BDS is executed for the first time, BDS makes two 'hidden' attribute
folders in "x:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>".
The one is ".borland".
One more is Folder of a random name to begin with ".".
When you delete these folders, a problem may be solved.

It is in the correct place. I suspect the item below will fix it. Will
try ASAP. |

It seems to have been my misunderstanding...
I tested it.
When I deleted a folder, BDS started normally.
But BDS started normally when I put a license file there without deleting a
folder.

No, that didn't work either. I may just try the uninstall/install again.
Perhaps the license file must be present during install.

No go with uninstall/install. I noticed the license manager tool and
tried to import the trial license file. It didn't like it at all.
Perhaps another complete install on a fresh Win XP. Not looking forward
to this. This stuff should just work like all the other trials I have
tested.
Thanks for the suggestions anyway. I will report back on the complete
new install. |

No luck doing a fresh install on another copy of VMware Win XP SP2
machine on another computer. This is just plain not working. Perhaps I
got a bad license file. Guess I will wait a few more months before
sending Borland some upgrade money. BCB6 works just fine for what I need.

James,
I too had the exact same problem. I uninstalled/reinstalled and put the
license file in C:\Documents and Settings\"UserName" per instructions but
kept getting the same prompt for Serial Number and Authorization Key. After
much frustration, I copied the file to every directory under C:\Documents
and Settings\ as I have a another user on this machine with their username
under that directory as well. I wish I could tell you exactly which one the
trial finally picked up (to tired of doing them one at a time), but it
pulled it from one of those directories and finally started. I'm not sure
if you're setup is the same as mine, but I have two other folders with my
UserName and a suffix attached - C:\Documents and Settings\UserName.NA and
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName~NA. I suspect that it picked it up from
one of those, although it might have recognized it under C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users. Who knows, but it's up and running finally. The only
problem is that it took 5 days to figure it out and now I only have 25 days
remaining on my license. First time I"ve had trouble with a Borland trial.
Hope this helps.

Hey Chief,
Thanks for the suggestion but it didn't help. But you got me thinking. I
ran the Sysinternals File Monitor program to see what bds.exe was up to.
It clearly opened and read my license file in the correct directory. It
also tried to open a lot of other directories starting with a period
that were not present before opening .ghz-Inc2006-zm. It then does some
back and forth operations between files in the .borland and
..ghz-Inc2006-zm directories before it gives up and opens the
registration program bdsreg.exe.
It didn't look in any other user directories. There is clearly something
wrong with the way it works because it read my file but didn't activate
the trial.
Thanks for your help anyway.
