I did this a long time ago, and I don't remember having too many problems.
Yes, extra 3rd party components will need upgraded to D7 versions (DCUs,
BPLs, etc.) Usually when you buy the components, they come with
D5,D6,D7 versions but you may need to reinstall them because when you
installed them before, they only installed into the D5 IDE. Of course
the Delphi components are automatically upgraded. The biggest challenge
I had was older components that the software designers didn't upgrade to
D7 version and that I had to abandon because I didn't purchase the
source code. But that was a rare thing. Most good components have D7
versions. And the subtle differences between D5 to D7 didn't seem to
affect much of the work I had done. Many of the changes were behind the
scenes in the IDE and I think to variants and automation (OLE) stuff.
You will get errors if you try to compile programs which use older
version DCUs. You cannot compile programs in D7 with D5 DCUs or BPLs.
I made the conversion and after a few months, I dropped my D5 version
and eliminated all references to the D5 version so that I had a clean
working development environment, although some might keep both versions
operating.
D7 has also had some updates, that you should probably apply only after
you install and run it at least once. You get that from the Borland web
site after you register.
D7, in my humble opinion, was a much better version than Version 5 both
more capable and more stable.
With that said, I still never regretted the upgrade. I fear that will
be it for Borland Delphi in Win32 development. So I have figured my
next step is to start to study .Net development before I make that
upgrade.
